Report: Ben Ditches J.Lo
(CBS/AP)
One day they're getting married, the next day they're no longer a couple. People magazine is reporting Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck not only have postponed their wedding, but the Hollywood power couple has broken up.
The Early Show entertainment contributor Jess Cagle, who is also a senior editor for People, tells co-anchor Rene Syler the magazine found out about it on Friday.
Cagle said, "Several sources close to the couple said that, indeed, they had actually broken it off. Now, whether they've broken it off for good, I'm not sure, but they certainly are on a break from each other at the moment."
The magazine quotes a J.Lo friend as saying she's "devastated" that Affleck called off their wedding, originally scheduled for Sunday.
Their publicists said the wedding was postponed because of too much publicity.
But most media watchers aren't buying it. Nicknamed "Bennifer" for their combined star power, this couple has never wanted privacy before. They even recreated their engagement in a music video.
Todd Gold of People magazine said, "Given the attention Jennifer Lopez seems to crave and love, it is ironic that they blame the media for canceling their wedding or postponing their wedding."
Cagle noted, "We believe that Ben is the one who suggested that they call off the wedding and then decided you know, what? We should end this, at least for the time being, take a little breather."
Us Weekly magazine had reported that the vows and reception would occur at Sotto Il Monte, a private $29 million estate in the Montecito area, near Santa Barbara. Guests, including Matt Damon, Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry and Alec Baldwin, were set to be shuttled to the wedding from nearby resort hotels, the magazine said. There might have been as many as three decoy brides.
But late indications were that site had been changed. Previous rumors about the wedding have placed it in Kauai, Hawaii; Atlanta and Scotland. Affleck himself has teased reporters by saying: "It is in Namibia on Nov. 15. So you go ahead and fly on down, and we'll see you there."
The Star recently reported Lopez had been suffering premarital jitters.
If or when the wedding happens, it will be the third for Lopez, 33, and the first for Affleck, 31. The couple met while filming this summer's infamous bomb "Gigli."
Lisa Karlin of People magazine told CBS Radio News even if the breakup is final, "We will be seeing more of them." The couple shot a second film together before the release of "Gigli. The new work is titled "Jersey Girl."
"Miramax postponed its opening until early next year to give it some distance from 'Gigli,'" said Karlin.
