'Chic' Judges Rate Evening Wear
The Chic on a Shoestring series continues with great summer evening outfits for those on a tight budget.
Suze Yalof Schwartz, executive fashion director at Glamour magazine, put The Early Show's Hannah Storm, Russ Mitchell and Debbye Turner to the test to see if they could tell which outfits were steals, costing a fraction of designer prices of the other outfits. Former champion Russ felt lucky, but this time, luck was on Hannah's side.
She quipped, "All that shopping at Target really pays off."
Rubbing it in, game host Rene Syler said, "Listen Russ, this is what happens when you go into a competition and you're overconfident."
His answer? "What about Debbye?"
The three evening looks were:
The Pants Look
The bohemian tunic is the rage this summer, says Schwartz, especially in eye-popping prints and colors. For an updated beach look, she says, wear them over a bathing suit. The top is a great investment because it can easily go from day to night, according to Schwartz. It was paired with chic white jeans.
Splurge:
Celine Top, $600
Chanel Jeans, $755
GRAND TOTAL: $1,355
Steal:
Inc. Top, $59
Old Navy Jeans, $32
GRAND TOTAL: $91
Schwartz's note: The Celine top is made of silk while the Inc. top is made of rayon.
Beaded Skirt Look
Beads and embroidery were seen on the spring/summer fashion show runways. Schwartz says the skirt was a hit for summer, but it is a classic piece that you can wear year after year. The skirt is perfect for a summer wedding or a black-tie event, she says. The skirt can be paired with a silk camisole or strapless top. For the chic challenge, she paired the skirt with a mock turtleneck top.
Steal:
Chetta B. Beaded Skirt, $408
Banana Republic Top, $40
GRAND TOTAL: $448.00
Splurge:
Polo Beaded Skirt, $5,500
Dolce and Gabbana Top, $600
GRAND TOTAL: $6,100.00
Schwartz's note: The Ralph Lauren skirt is hand beaded and is made of silk. The Chetta B. skirt is made out of polyester.
Black Lace Look
The black lace look is sure to make heads turn, says Schwartz. According to her, there is nothing sexier than a black dress over a bright slip. The dress can be worn throughout the year. For winter, you can wear a cashmere or fur stole over your shoulders. Schwartz says the A-line style is flattering for all shapes.
Splurge:
Marc Jacobs Dress, $2,600
Steal:
BCBG Dress, $260
Schwartz's note: The Marc Jacobs dress is more expensive because the lace is hand-stiched and the slip is silk. The BCBG slip is polyester and the lace is machine-made.
