Virginia's Sweet Summer Nights
(CBS)
For the summer, CBS News Sunday Morning will be making "Roadside Stops."
The first stop is a Virginia landmark — Carl's Frozen Custard in Fredericksburg, where not just locals are in line.
Some come from as far away as Naples, Fla., to get Carl's custard.
"It's ice cream with certain quantities of egg yolk in it," says Daniel Sponseller. "That's really all custard is."
He should know. His uncle, Carl Sponseller, opened the stand in 1947. And Carl's still makes custard the same way – with a 1940s Electro Freeze Machine. Hand scooped, with a signature "twist," the three flavors – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry – are enough to draw a crowd.
Samantha Crabtree has been scooping ice cream there for 9 years. She says Carl's get about 700 customers a night.
"I love to see the little kids faces light up when they get the twisted ice cream cone," says Crabtree.
