In an exhibit called, “Jellies: Living Art,” jellyfish, great and small, from all corners of the earth, do a delicate dance. The star of the show is the translucent spotted comb jelly, caught in the waters by marine biologists such as George Matusmoto. "It's so fragile," says Matusmoto. "The slightest wave of a flipper or hand can essentially tear it apart. It's a very difficult animal to collect, and the fact that it's on exhibit is just amazing." Its scientific name, "Leucothea pulchra," means "beautiful white spectacle." It’s the first time these jellies have ever been displayed in captivity. "They’re one of the most awesome marine animals that I've ever seen," says Bruce Upton, the jellyfish caregiver. "They're just spectacular, psychedelic." Light, projected into the tanks, is refracted into a rainbow of colors by the jelly's comb-like rows, as it moves through the water. Their unworldly beauty has inspired artists, too.
