Bob Schieffer (CBS)

(CBS News)

Bob Schieffer is broadcast journalism's most experienced Washington reporter. He is the network's chief Washington correspondent and also serves as anchor and moderator of "Face The Nation", CBS News' Sunday public affairs broadcast.

Schieffer served as interim anchor of "The CBS Evening News" from March 10, 2005, until Aug. 31, 2006. He is a regular contributor to "The CBS Evening News ."

Schieffer has covered Washington for CBS News for more than 30 years and is one of the few broadcast or print journalists to have covered all four major beats in the nation's capital - the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department and Capitol Hill. He has been Chief Washington correspondent since 1982 and congressional correspondent since 1989 and has covered every presidential campaign and been a floor reporter at all of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions since 1972. He began anchoring "Face The Nation" in May 1991.

Schieffer is a member of the Broadcasting/Cable Hall of Fame and is the recipient of the 2003 Paul White Award, presented by the Radio-Television News Directors Association. The award recognizes an individual's lifetime contribution to electronic journalism. Past CBS recipients include Edward R. Murrow ('64); Morley Safer ('66); Walter Cronkite ('70, '81); Don Hewitt ('87); Mike Wallace ('91); Charles Kuralt ('94); Dan Rather ('97); Ed Bradley (2000); Charles Osgood (2005) and Steve Kroft (2010).

He has won many other broadcast journalism awards, including seven Emmy Awards, one of which was for Lifetime Achievement, and two Sigma Delta Chi Awards. In 2002, he was chosen as Broadcaster of the Year by the National Press Foundation. Schieffer was also the 2004 recipient of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation Award and the American News Women's Club Helen Thomas Award for Excellence in Journalism. In 2005, his alma mater, Texas Christian University, created the Schieffer School of Journalism in his honor. In 2008, Schieffer won the Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment award from the Radio Television News Directors Association and was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress.

Schieffer has been a principal anchor for CBS News since 1973, when he was named anchor of the "CBS Sunday Night News." In August 1996, he stepped down as anchor of the Saturday edition of the "CBS Evening News", a post he held for 20 years. He and his colleague, Dan Rather, stand as the only two 20-year anchors of a regularly scheduled network news broadcast.

Schieffer joined CBS News in 1969 and, after a brief stint as a general assignment reporter, was named Pentagon correspondent, a post he held for four years.

Before joining CBS News, he was a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and, in 1965, became the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam. Schieffer later became news anchor at WBAP-TV Dallas/Fort Worth, a post that eventually led to his joining CBS News.

He is the author of "Bob Schieffer's America," "Face The Nation: My Favorite Stories from the First 50 Years of the Award-winning News Broadcast," as well as the 2003 New York Times bestseller, "This Just In: What I Couldn't Tell You On TV" and "The Acting President," published in 1989.

Schieffer was born in Austin, Texas. He and his wife reside in Washington, D.C.

It's nice to see Governor Brewer of Arizona stand up to Barack Obama. I'm sure that people in the media such as Bob Schieffer would feign offense over such a matter, perhaps as a cover for their absolute failure to critically examine candidate Obama in 2008. Will Americans be treated to more fetching, water toting, rolling over and bedwetting by the press in order to cover for B.O.? To be sure! Count on it!

Mr. Schieffer,
I just read your remarks about Gov. Brewer's face-to-face with Obama and I'm really surprised at your reaction. You use the word "respect" only when it should be used when applied to Obama....not when he should use it in regard to the American People. Obama shows no respect to us. He disrespected the People of Arizona and the country when he decided to sue when he should have stood beside the governor. He disrespects us all when he lies about what good he has done for this country and the People are beginning to understand that he is nothing but a Socialist and wants to control this country. You know better and I can't understand why a man with your experiences can't see this. Remember the phase.."THE SILENT MAJORITY"?? Well, that time is over and you and Obama better get use to it.

Could you imagine if Brewer had done this to Nixon!!! He would have had her shot on the spot! Obama has shown nothing but class in the face of such humiliation. From the 'You Lie" outburst to now. He has been an example for Americans as to how they should act. Its called manners!!!! BTW, Brewer became offended at Obama during a PRIVATE meeting at the WH. Why didn't she reserve her comments for a private time. People need to have some respect for each other. Obama has shown a lot of respect to people who clearly did not deserve it.

Dear Bob: Could you or some other reporter PLEASE ask Romney and the others to specifically name the "job killing regulations" they want to do away with? I mean, is it something like preventing a corporation from dumping slaughterhouse blood into a river, or perhaps preventing the sale of tainted food? We need to make these guys get specific.

I just saw your report on the finger pointing of President Obama. I wish the "press" would be doing more finger pointing and ivestigations as is their responsibility under the Constitution. The press has abdicated their responsibility to inform the public of ***ALL*** be it Republican or Democratic views of the goings on in the political world. CBS again shows it is clearly a liberal leaning organization and the public should really be pointing the finger toward the media.

I cannot believe that you are going to have a Presidential debate with only 2 of the canidates, on Face the Nation. What is going on with you news people and news stations. Your bias is so blatantly obvious that it is a slap in the face to my intelligence. First, Brian Williams almost totally ignores Dr. Paul and Rick Santorum at the debates and now you are going to have debates without them. Americans are tired of this type of media hype and we will no longer tolerate it. Get your acts together or you will become something of the past.

Bob,
you have always been a shinning light of truth to me,here is my question. We are told that the Justice dept does not have the staff or funds to go after the Wall st crowd who ripped us off of billions. yet, they have the funds and staff to spend three years and millions of dollars to protect a media industry that has ripped off, artists, writers, musicians, etc ever since the days of payola. the fact is that the internet sharing allows writers, musicians, independent film makers, etc to put their work out there, gain the rewards, without the help of Sony, Disney,Warner bros, Murdoc, etc. who have had too much control for too long.
congrads on the hour show, it is much needed in these times.
thanks,
jc

Mr. Schieffer, you have really disappointed me. I remember when you REPORTED the news and now you are TRYING to make the news. You know very well that your report on what Mr Romney said...."I enjoy firing..." people had nothing to do with the common workers but companies such as insurance companies. You knew this and yet you decided it would cause a stink and decided to do it to cause that stink. Before you start, I'm not a Republican and politics have nothing to do with this post. It has to do with having some honor as a human being....something I think you have lost. I followed your career for many years and saw a deep decline in the way you make the news and how one-sided you became when dealing with people. You *****-foot around some people, the President comes to mind...and TRY to "nail" others with statements that you knew they did not make....Romney comes up. I have been around as long as you have. Seventy five years to be exact and I remember reporters such as Edward R. Morrow. One that you and others in the business today will never measure up to. There is no respect for you here until you stop disrespecting the "common" people by trying to MAKE news instead of doing your job and REPORT the news.

Mr. Schieffer,
I've been to a National Park, can I be the Secretary of the Interior? Is Herman Cane kidding? What a fool! Secretary of Defense. The only more foolish would be someone who takes him seriously. I know you have to do it, but it's a shame that we have to spend our time listening to someone as unqualified as he.

Mr. Schiefer,

Your liberal bias toward Republicans is shameful. Your boasts about journalistic principles is laughable when it applies to conservatives only. In my opinion sir, you have risen to your highest level of incompetence. CBS has demonstrated its liberal bias by extending your show to an hour versus canning an old and out-of-touch commentator.
