A Regime Change In Iraq?

A weekly commentary by 60 Minutes II Correspondent Charles Grodin:

Several times in recent weeks, President Bush has called for regime change in Iraq.

Here he is calling for it in an interview with Scott Pelley on this broadcast.

There aren't a lot of leaders who willingly give up power. Slobodan Milosevic wasn't the type.

After a 26-hour standoff, Serbian special forces arrested him in the country formerly known as Yugoslavia.

The foreign minister from Qatar reportedly asked Saddam Hussein to give up power and go into exile. Saddam said "no."

A few people come to mind who willingly gave up power:

  • President Johnson.

  • President Nixon.

  • Edward VIII, King of England.

Saddam Hussein doesn't seem much like those guys.

There's no video of Presidents Johnson or Nixon or King Edward of England, standing on a balcony shooting a gun in the air.

Somehow I feel this whole inspection disarmament thing isn't going to work out and the bombs will start falling soon. I hope not.

Gee, I wish Saddam was more like Edward.
