(CBS)  Allen Pizzey has been a CBS News Correspondent based in Rome since l989. He reports regularly for the CBS Evening News and has covered scores of major international stories, including the continuing crisis in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, the United Nations' famine relief efforts and U.S. military activity in Somalia, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the crisis and subsequent multi-racial elections in South Africa.

Pizzey is also no stranger to reporting from combat zones -- he was one of the first journalists to report from Baghdad after Iraq invaded Kuwait and has covered Middle East unrest for decades, as well as the bombing of Tripoli and the Gulf tanker war.

Before his assignment to Rome, he worked out of the CBS News bureaus in Athens, Greece (1982-89) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1980-82).

Prior to joining CBS News in 1980, Pizzey was a print journalist for the Argus Africa News Service, covering black Africa. He also freelanced in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for the Toronto Globe & Mail, Yorkshire Post, New Zealand Herald, UPI Photo, BBC, Mutual News and other news organizations.

Pizzey has won many prestigious awards for his reporting, including two Emmy Awards in the single breaking news category: for the Beirut bombing (1983) and for a story on the "Trojan horse" from South Africa (1985). He has received four Overseas Press Club Awards: one for his television coverage of Kosovo (1999) and three for his work for radio, including one for reporting on Lebanon and two for his dispatches from the Persian Gulf. Pizzey also received a Sigma Delta Chi bronze medallion and an Alfred I. dupont-Columbia University silver baton for his reports on the Persian Gulf war.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1946, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Pizzey was graduated from Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1969 with a degree in business administration. He lives in Rome.
