Anthony Mason

CBS News Business Correspondent

(CBS)  Anthony Mason has served as CBS News' business correspondent since 1998, reporting primarily for the CBS Evening News. He also contributes an ongoing series of profiles of mystery writers to CBS News Sunday Morning.

One of CBS News' most experienced correspondents, Mason has reported from more than 30 countries for the organization. He has been based in New York since 1993. Before that, he was CBS News' Moscow correspondent (1990-93). In addition to his many other assignments, Mason was part of the Network's award-winning coverage of the 1991 Soviet coup attempt and contributed to the primetime special, The Soviet Union: Seven Days in May (June 1991).

Prior to that, he was assigned to CBS News' London bureau (1987-90). While there, Mason reported on the fifth anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the Azerbaijani uprising, among many other major stories. In 1989, he was the first journalist to report on the exodus of East German refugees through Hungary. Mason has also reported on the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia; the Iran-Iraq war, including Iraqi chemical attacks on the Kurds; the war in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of Soviet troops; the assassination of Pakistani leader Gen. Zia ul Haq and the rise of Benazir Bhutto; and the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Mason joined CBS News in March 1986 as a reporter in the Northeast bureau. He was promoted to correspondent in September 1989.

Before that, Mason was a reporter for WCBS-TV, the CBS-owned station in New York City (1984-86), where he covered, among many other stories, the Gen. William C. Westmoreland and Ariel Sharon libel trials. Prior to that, Mason was the New Jersey correspondent for WCAU-TV Philadelphia (1982-84), covering southern New Jersey and state politics, and a general assignment and political reporter for KJRH-TV Tulsa, Okla. (1980-82).

At WCBS-TV, he earned the 1985 New York Associated Press award for General Excellence of Individual Reporting on Vietnam veterans. At WCAU-TV, he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement by a Reporter, as well as the Pennsylvania Associated Press Award for best feature story.

Mason was born June 23, 1956, in New York. He was graduated from Georgetown University in 1980 with a B.A. in English and a minor in government. Mason and his wife, Christina Anne Unhoch, live with two daughters in Rye, N.Y.
