In the kickoff to our "Chic on a Shoestring" series, The Early Show sent stylist David Evangelista on a quest to find two women to make over, just in time for fall.
David made a name on “The Rosie O'Donnell Show” as a hair stylist to the stars and a famed maker over. Today, he changes the beauty regime of two women and then shares his beauty secrets all available at the local drug store.
Our two candidates were hand picked by Evangelista at Macy's and Toys R Us.
Makeover No. 1:
Patricia Valentine had dull, lifeless brown hair and since she's always being told she looks like Dyan Cannon, she wanted Dyan’s blonde tresses too.
David also decided he wanted to cut a lot of her hair in layers, so her coif would have more volume and oomph. David's colorist, Parvin, painted permanent color into Pat's hair to cover up her gray, she's about 75% gray, and also to brighten up her base color.
20 minutes later, the base color was rinsed out, and Pat's hair was quickly dried. Next, Parvin painted in highlights throughout Pat's hair using a process called balliage, which is essentially a sweeping highlights through the head with a brush. The highlights are left on for about 15 minutes and then rinsed out. David then cut lots of layers into Pat's hair so that it would have more bounce and volume, but didn't touch a lot of the length
The result: a layered bob that has volume, brightness, and takes years off Pat's face.
Makeover No. 2:
Kelly Trifiletti complained that her thick, dark hair was very coarse and curly, and difficult to manage. David decided that Kelly's color needed to be brightened up dramatically, and that she needed a lot less volume in her hairstyle.
Parvin started by putting an all over color throughout Kelly's hair in a shade a bit lighter than Kelly's natural color, to cover her gray hair and warm up her tone a bit.
After the color was rinsed out, Parvin did the balliage highlights to Kelly's hair as well. After 20 minutes under the dryer, the highlights were rinsed out, and David started cutting.
One of Kelly's chief concerns about her hair was how long it took her to dry, almost an hour every day, because of its bulk and curl. David decided to get rid of the bulk by cutting into the hair, ridding it of its great density and heft. He also cut some layers into her hair to lighten it up a bit and to get rid of some of the weight.
The result: a polished yet sexy, playful look that David says will be ultra-easy for Kelly to do at home and take some time off her hour of drying each day!
