Airport Renamed To Honor 9/11 Heroes
(AP)
New Jersey's Newark International Airport has been given a name change in honor of the heroes of 9/11.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has renamed it Newark Liberty International Airport.
The name is a compromise.
New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey and New York Gov. George Pataki caught everyone by surprise last week when they announced the plan to call the airport Liberty International Airport at Newark.
Newark Mayor Sharpe James considered placing the city's name at the end an insult. As a result, the name was tweaked.
One of the hijacked planes on Sep. 11 left Newark before crashing in Pennsylvania. Whatever the airport is called, baggage tags and tickets would still carry the EWR code.
The Port Authority's director says the new name honors defenders of freedom and the heroes of Sept. 11, and at the same time preserves what he says is Newark's strong identity with its world-class airport.
