John Turturro Gets Silly
(CBS)
For her weekend box office report, Early Show Contributor Laurie Hibberd talks to John Turturro, who is one of the stars of the new Adam Sandler film, "Mr. Deeds."
Says Turturro, "I was looking to do something that would be fun and my son could go see...a family picture, and then Adam Sandler called me up. I had hosted 'Saturday Night Live' a few years ago, and he asked me what roles I liked."
Together, Sandler and Turturro came up with the role of Emilio Lopez, the continental butler without the English accent.
"I think, originally, it was English, but then he said, 'We can’t do that. There have been too many great English butlers. He hails from Spain.' I taped various people and sort of figured out a combination accent," says the actor.
The role is Turturro's first in an Adam Sandler film. So how did this Yale-trained thespian like working with a former standup comic?
Tuturro calls Sandler "a very generous comedian... We had a really good rapport together, and I think it shows in the movie, and I’m very pleased with the end result."
Pleased as he may be with the picture, don't expect John Turturro to be combing through the papers, looking for the box office numbers. "Of course, I want the film to do well," he explains. "But obviously I’m not really driven by that."
And his chemistry with Adam Sandler worked. John Turturro will appear in Sandler's next film, "Anger Management," which is filming now.
