Gunman Shoots Himself At CBS L.A.

(CBS)  A suicidal gunman stormed into the CBS television network complex and kept police at bay for more than four hours before ending the standoff by shooting himself, officials said.

A lone man in a pickup smashed through the gates, brandished a firearm, and allegedly tried to shoot at a mailroom supervisor, reported CBS Station KNX-AM's Todd Leitz. Authorities brought in hostage negotiators and even his sister to talk to him but he became unresponsive and then a gunshot was heard. He apparently shot himself in the abdomen-chest area.

The standoff forced the evacuation of CBS' Television City, a sprawling complex where "The Price is Right," soap operas, and other shows are filmed.

The 31-year-old man, identified as Raymond Derouen Jr., remained hospitalized in critical-but stable condition Wednesday morning, after shooting himself in the abdomen, reported KNX. No one else was injured.

David Tom, who plays Billy Abbott on "The Young and the Restless," told KCBS-TV that the gunman interrupted filming on the soap opera.

Police told Leitz Derouen had no connection to CBS but apparently felt that, as a broadcast facility, CBS should tell his story. But there's no word from the police on exactly why he did this.

CBS Television City, which bears the CBS eye logo on its main building, is the entertainment industry's oldest studio built specifically for television. The complex has been home to numerous CBS fixtures, including: "All in the Family," "The Smothers Brothers," "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour," and "Hollywood Squares."

KCBS-TV, KNX-AM and KNX-FM are located in a separate facility and were not disrupted by the evacuation.
