Advertisement | ![]() (CBS) (CBS) Tracy Smith is national correspondent for The Early Show . Smith, who co-anchored the Saturday Early Show from August 2005 to May 2007, adds to her duties reports for the The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and will contribute cover stories and other reports to CBS News' Sunday Morning. Smith joined CBS News in 2000 as a correspondent for The Early Show . She has covered major news stories, including Campaign '04 from New Hampshire where she interviewed a unique group of women, the wives of the then Democratic Presidential nominees, who were hoping to be the next First Lady: Judith Steinberg Dean, Elizabeth Edwards, and Teresa Heinz Kerry, the war in Iraq, the crash of American Airlines flight 587 in Queens, N.Y., the Sept. 11 attacks, and the March 2001 school shooting in Santee, Calif. In Jan. 2004, she covered Campaign '04 . Before joining CBS News, Smith worked as an anchor and reporter for Channel One News (1993-2000), a daily newscast that airs in more than 12,000 secondary schools nationwide. She covered a broad range of stories, including the Clinton Administration, the rise of neo-Nazis in Germany, Yitzhak Rabin's assassination in Israel, the civil war in Southern Sudan and the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda. Prior to that, Smith served as a part-time reporter for KERO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Bakersfield, Calif (1993). She has done numerous multi-part series on a variety of issues since joining The Early Show such as Megan's Law and mothers dealing with stress at home and in the workplace. As well as a live interview with Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler. Smith contributes to "Study Hall," a bi-monthly report on teen issues. Smith has also contributed to CBS News Sunday Morning. She has hosted a number of shows featuring a live audience. Among her live guests were President Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev. Smith has been recognized many times for her work. She is the recipient of seven National Educational Media Network Awards, including a Golden Apple for a story on nuclear proliferation. The Chicago International Film Festival honored her with a Golden Hugo for a piece on abusive relationships. She was also awarded a Gold World Medal from the New York Festivals for a series on heroin abuse. Smith was born in Wyoming, Ohio. She was graduated cum laude from Boston University in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree and from the University of Southern California in 1993 with a master's of arts degree in broadcast journalism.
