Farrakhan And Shabazz Meet

Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, and Attallah Shabazz, eldest daughter of Malcolm X, speak together publicly for the first time about the role Farrakhan played leading to her father's assassination.

Shabazz believes Farrakhan's words fomented the hate that killed her black revolutionary father in 1965. Farrakhan was still speaking negatively about Malcolm X seven years ago.

Shabazz and Farrakhan will appear together in an interview with Mike Wallace for a 60 Minutes report to be broadcast Sunday, May 14.

Farrakhan has been recuperating from prostate cancer and has acknowledged a change in his attitude toward Malcolm X that he wished to express to the slain black leader's daughter.

Shabazz witnessed the shooting of her father when she was six years old and wasn't sure she could confront Farrakhan. "I did not know if I wanted to sit across from him," she tells Wallace. "I didn't know if my heart could handle it."

Malcolm X broke with the National of Islam in 1964 and was castigated by Farrakhan and the organization, some of whose members then assassinated him. The historic meeting between Farrakhan and Shabazz took place last month at Farrakhan's home just outside Phoenix, Ariz.
