CBS' Final Ratings Doubled

The all-American final between Andre Agassi and Todd Martin more than doubled last year's ratings in the U.S. Open final. And the men didn't even fare as well as the women.

CBS' Sunday afternoon match in which Agassi outlasted Martin in five sets posted a 7.1 overnight rating and a 14 share, up 133 percent from last year when Rafter defeated Mark Philippoussis.

But for the third straight year, the women posted a higher overnight rating than the men in the U.S. Open finale.

Serena Williams' upset win over Martina Hingis in the women's championship Saturday had a 7.2 overnight mark and a 17 share. That was double last year's title match between Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis.

It was the first time that the U.S. Open women's final followed the men's semifinal matches. Usually, it is played between the two matches.

The tournament was the highest-rated since 1991, posting a 4.1 overnight rating, up 52 percent from last year's 2.7.

The rating is the percentage of television households tuned to a broadcast while the share is the percentage watching a program among those televisions in use at the time.
