Former Player Behind Bars

Dontonio Wingfield, who had a limited stay in the NBA, was sentenced today to a year in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting two suburban Cincinnati police officers.

Wingfield, 25, was arrested Thursday when he showed up two days late for his originally scheduled sentencing in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

He was jailed overnight before today's sentencing.

The case goes back to August 1998 when Wingfield fought with the police officers when they arrived in response to a report of his dispute with a girlfriend at her apartment. Police said Wingfield resisted arrest, injuring one of the officers.

In April, the same judge, who sentenced him, David Davis, ordered Wingfield arrested when he failed to show up for a court appearance. Wingfield arrived a week late, but Davis threw out the arrest warrant.

Early Wednesday, Wingfield was involved in a one-car accident in suburban Cincinnati. Greenhills police said Wingfield told them he blacked out shortly before his car struck a utility pole. Wingfield, who was not seriously hurt, was cited for failure to control his vehicle and failure to display a driver's license, police said.

He played for the University of Cincinnati in the 1993-94 season. He left after his freshman year and played for the Seattle SuperSonics and Portland Trail Blazers. Portland released him last year.
