Hinckley Takes Day Trip
(CBS)
The man who shot President Reagan has taken a very short trip outside the walls of a Washington D.C. mental hospital.
John Hinckley Jr. briefly left Saint Elizabeths Hospital Thursday in a van followed by Secret Service agents.
But CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reports Hinckley did not reach his intended destination. The station says the vehicle carrying Hinckley drove into to Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Virginia where it stopped and turned around.
Hinckley was found innocent by reason of insanity in the shootings of Reagan and three others in 1981. A recent federal court ruling allows Hinckley to take short, supervised outings from the hospital.
