Glam Golf At Pebble Beach

(CBS)  Sometimes, it's difficult to figure out whether the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is a golf tournament or a star-studded social event. This is one sports events where the professionals frequently take second place to celebrities, reports Bonnie Bernstein of CBS Sports.

It was 62 years ago when crooner Bing Crosby started the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as a friendly clambake. These days, though, when you attend the event, everywhere you look there is an athlete, or an artist, or an actor, like tourney regular Clint Eastwood, to "make your day."

"I get more starstruck by professional golfers than I do by movie stars," says actor Chris O'Donnell.

Kevin Costner, who starred as a golfer in the movie Tin Cup, says the movie role is no help to him when he is on the course at Pebble Beach. "I can't relate it to anything, because Tin Cup was a great golfer. I'm an average golfer."

The tournament is played on three separate courses, each with spectacular ocean views. But the wind and the water can make for a taxing day on the links.

"You have to have your club welded to your hand," quips O'Donnell. "It's tough to hold onto the club."

Actor John O'Hurley, who played J. Peterman on Seinfeld says Pebble Beach is the only place he plays golf where, "if I'm playing badly halfway through the round, I'm starting to think about what really nice restaurant I'm going to have dinner at tonight."

Jack Lemmon has been a longtime victim of tough conditions and tough luck at Pebble Beach. The actor has played for 27 years and missed the cut every time. But some experts have offered advice.

"Always hold onto the pointy end of the club," deadpans O'Hurley.

Samuel L. Jackson, who calls Pebble Beach "American Golf Heaven," also didn't take things too seriously: "Greg Norman told me to swing at the crowd. They will stop, and you can get a pretty good line."
