WASHINGTON (AP) The State Department recommended Thursday night that Americans around the world ``maintain a high level of vigilance'' and a low profile.
The advice was contained in an unusual ``worldwide caution'' announcement designed ``to reflect the potential for retaliation in light of the tensions with Iraq over U.N. weapons inspections.''
Americans traveling abroad were advised to get in touch with U.S. embassies for up-to-date information on security conditions.
``Vary routes and times for all required travel and treat mail from unfamiliar sources with suspicion,'' the department advised.
