Death Report of Bin Laden Son Believable

A senior Western diplomat speaking to CBS News strengthened this morning's report that Osama bin Laden's son Saad has died.

"Intelligence information suggests Saad bin Laden has not been in communication with anyone for a few months now. That strengthens speculation over his death," a NATO-country ambassador said to CBS News' Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad, Pakistan, Thursday night.

Speaking to CBS News on condition of anonymity, the ambassador said, "So far, there is no indication that he was anywhere near his father if and when killed. Osama bin Laden is apparently still alive."

Pakistan Dismisses Report of Bin Laden Son's Death

(AP)
A Pakistani intelligence officer has dismissed as "rubbish" a reported claim by an American counterterrorism official that the son of Osama bin Laden was likely killed in a U.S. missile strike.

National Public Radio quoted a senior U.S. official as saying American spy agencies were "80 to 85 percent" certain the al Qaeda boss's son had been killed in Pakistan. The source did tell NPR that it was impossible to confirm the identity, as there was no body on which to conduct DNA tests.

"People get very excited over unconfirmed information claiming the possible death of a bin Laden," a Pakistani official told CBS News' Farhan Bokhari in response to the report.

"At this point, unless proven otherwise, I am treating this news as no more than rubbish… There is no proof of Saad bin Laden's death," the official said Thursday. "Let's not forget, such claims have been made before."

A spokeswoman with the U.S. military in Afghanistan told CBS News correspondent Mandy Clark she had no information on the death of a bin Laden.

According to the NPR report, Saad bin Laden is believed to be in his 20s, and is thought to be active in al Qaeda, but not a significant player.

Recession Tough For Al Qaeda, Too?

(CBS)

As the global economy languished in the throes of deep recession, so, it seems, did al Qaeda.

An audio message intercepted by CBS News, sent by the terror group's chief financial manager (a label used by Sept. 11 Commission), portrays a rare image of the terrorist enterprise; hard-up.

This audio was not intended for mass consumption. It was not one of the typical propaganda speeches so often released on the jihadists' preferred Internet chat rooms and forums.

Mostafa Abul Yazid, who is also al Qaeda's senior figure in Afghanistan, is heard asking an unknown contact in Turkey for urgent financial support.

Al Qaeda No. 2 Blasts Obama, Again

(CBS)
Al Qaeda's deputy commander, Ayman Zawahri, has issued another scathing attack on President Obama in a new audio tape released on jihadi Web sites.

Zawahri argues that the U.S. president is following the same policies as his predecessor, George W. Bush, and that the plan to send thousands more American troops to Afghanistan will only lead to more "killings and injuries."

Al Qaeda Urges Somalis To Attack Ships

(CBS)
A senior Saudi Arabian al Qaeda operative has called on Somali jihadists to step up their attacks on "crusader" forces at sea in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden, and on land in neighboring Djibouti, which hosts France’s largest military base in Africa.

"To our steadfast brethren in Somalia, take caution and prepare yourselves,” Sa'id Ali Jabir Al Khathim Al Shihri (AKA Abu Sufian al-Azdi) says in a new audiotape acquired by CBS News. “Increase your strikes against the crusaders at sea and in Djibouti.”

Bin Laden Urges Somalis To "Fight On"

(CBS)

Al Qaeda boss Osama bin Laden, speaking in a new audio recording released Thursday on various jihadi Web forums and downloaded by CBS News, has asked Somalis to rebel against their newly elected president.

Thursday's was the second audio released by bin Laden in six days, and the reference to Somalia's new president, who was only elected on Jan. 31, helps to date the recording.
