Prime Time Rosie?

(GETTY)
Having lived in MediaLand for years now, I’ve learned to maintain an ironic detachment from the day-to-day shocks and outrages and trumped up controversies.

For the most part, they’re contrived little “Can you believe this?!” stories designed to drum up interest and ratings. TV executives learned long ago that we’re a nation of rubberneckers, waiting for the next two-ego pileup to occur. (“Coming up next: Coulter vs. Edwards, Round 2!!”)

Late last night, though, the scuttlebutt circulating around MediaLand actually caught me off-guard and made my jaw drop.

Rosie O’Donnell may be going to MSNBC.

Mutiny!

(AP Photo)
Is there something in the jet fuel java at MSNBC?

First there was the “Shred Heard ‘Round The World” when we had Mika Brzezinski famously destroying her script featuring the Paris Hilton story.

Now today MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell questioned the quote-unquote news she was being asked to convey this afternoon, when she reported on Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman leaving a racist message on his son’s voicemail.
Why we play this stuff, I have no idea. But Chapman has since apologized saying he is ashamed for offending anyone.
Watch out, celebrities on TMZ.com and MSNBC producers. Hell hath no fury like an MSNBC woman dragged into covering tabloid chaff.

Note to Norah: You go, girl.

Live From New York ... It's Monday Morning

(CBS)
In case you missed it this morning at 6am EDT, the folks at MSNBC went on the air in their new way-cool digs.

The people who got to cut the ribbon? Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist and the rest of my friends at “Morning Joe.” (Along with their big brain behind the curtain, producer Chris Licht.)

The first couple of minutes was spent piling praise on the construction crew, the engineers and pretty much gawking at their new habitat.

I dropped a line to Willie Geist to see what he thought of the new place...

Republicans Resisting MSNBC?

(CBS/AP)
Can’t get enough Dennis Kucinich? Just tune into MSNBC.

Today in party-line news network boycotts, it’s been reported that in Republicans are turning their back on MSNBC in response to an interview conducted by the network’s David Shuster.

According to The Politico:
Word is, a growing number of GOP lawmakers have become mysteriously “unavailable” when asked to appear on MSNBC. Numerous meetings have taken place in both the House and the Senate side regarding the interview and “what to do about it,” Hill sources report.

One MSNBC producer told a Hill staffer, as relayed to us: “We can’t even get any republican senators!” While other offices immediately declared “absolutely not” when they heard the host was Shuster.

“There’s no difference because sending your boss over to David Shuster or the Democratic National Committee at this point,” sniffs one high-placed House source.

Dela-Where? Dela-Who?

(MSNBC)
Sure, we all get a bit overwhelmed when it comes to keeping track of just who’s running for president. Just as soon as Tommy Thompson leaves the race, Fred Thompson jumps in.

But in MSNBC's promotional website image for tonight’s New Hampshire debate among the Democratic presidential candidates, Delaware Senator Joe Biden is not featured in a collage of all the participants. (And no, the photo is not limited to three frontrunners – Gravel, Kucinich, Dodd and Richardson are all in the collage.)

A phone call to Biden’s national press secretary Mark Paustenbach confirmed the senator will be taking part in tonight’s event, even with the campaign’s reported focus on Iowa. (A voicemail left at MSNBC's press office has yet to be returned.)

I know for a fact that Joe Scarborough had a great chat with Biden two weeks ago on "Morning Joe" -- I was there, man -- and that the graphics MSNBC is using on-air include Biden, but still ... it's an omission worth noting.

Java Hangover?

(AP)
If there’s no such thing as a java hangover, then there should be.

This morning, I had the opportunity to co-host MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program – which airs from 6am to 9am (EDT) – and will be repeating the performance again tomorrow, so pardon the delay in posts today.

And tune in tomorrow, if you get a chance.

When News Readers Attack!

(iStockphoto)
A month ago, MSNBC’s Morning Joe news anchor Mika Brzezinski famously refused to read a story about Paris Hilton, going so far as attempting to set her news script on fire. (Unfortunately, her partner’s Bic lighter wasn’t up to the task) And in doing so, she became a YouTube celebrity, with the footage now having been viewed nearly three million times.

And yesterday, CNN’s lovable curmudgeon Jack Cafferty went so far as to – on live TV, mind you – ask/demand that the Lindsay Lohan story be removed from his teleprompter. On the grainy YouTube footage, he says “I wonder if we could get the Lindsay Lohan DUI arrest out of the teleprompter and put my script in. Is that possible?”

What’s going on nowadays?

Immoderate Moderators?

(AP)
When you think of political debate moderators, you think of old school types like Jim Lehrer and, over the years, Edwin Newman or Sander Vanocur. These journalists could be relied upon to navigate discussions dispassionately and professionally – and occasionally keeping the peace.

Welcome to the 21st century, folks. According to the AFL-CIO, a certain MSNBC host and frequent George Bush critic is going to moderate an upcoming Democratic debate held by the union:
Keith Olbermann, whose biting, pull-no-punches commentaries on MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” have been known to spike the blood pressure of their targets—ask Fox News’ belligerent right-winger Bill O’Reilly—will moderate the AFL-CIO Presidential Candidates Forum in Chicago on Aug. 7.
The debate will consist of some questions posed by AFL-CIO members in an online contest and a number of questions from Olbermann himself.

As you’d expect when a partisan personality gets involved in a debate, it’s causing a stir in some media quarters. One critical view comes from Inside Cable News:
A year and a half ago MSNBC could have probably worked Olbermann in to moderate a debate without drawing too much fire. But not now. Not after Olbermann has firmly placed himself on the left side of the political spectrum with numerous Special Commnets/attacks at the Republican administration, and one aimed at the Democratic Congress for not having a spine to stand up to Bush on the Iraq War, I don’t see how anyone can watch Olbermann moderate a debate without thinking of his biases. MSNBC is taking a big risk here.

Across The Media Universe: Information Age Edition

(CBS/The Early Show)
The Information Revolution – Fought To a Draw:

Wired magazine reported on a study suggesting that us Americans aren’t a whole lot more up on current events than we were back in 1989.
More than a decade after the Internet went mainstream, the world's richest information source hasn't necessarily made its users any more informed. A new study from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press shows that Americans, on average, are less able to correctly answer questions about current events than they were in 1989.
While it’s surprising to us that Americans can’t name Vice President Dick Cheney as readily as people used to know Vice President Dan Quayle, in Americans defense we’re more aware of political facts like “Who is the Speaker of the House?” and “Is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court conservative, moderate or liberal?”

And sure, “Daily Show” and “Colbert Report” viewers score higher than CNN and Fox News viewers, but they didn’t even ask Public Eye readers. We know you’d ace the quiz.

Across The Media Universe: Tying Up The Week's Loose Ends Edition

Bloggers Beware!: Brian Stelter – the recent college grad behind one of MediaLand’s favorite sites – was just hired by the New York Times to contribute to their online and print coverage of network news. Sweet gig, right? Not so fast, says Forbes, who says that working for The Man stunts bloggers' growth!
Recruiting from the blogosphere is not without its risks--for both sides. The acquisition of blogs by big media companies can alienate the very readers they're looking to pull in. Bloggers who join the mainstream press trade freedom for a steady paycheck but could get swallowed up by the larger media brand.
Wonkette founder Ana Marie Cox and ex-Rocketboom anchor Amanda Congdon are good examples. Now that they're at Time.com and ABC.com, respectively, neither enjoys the same high profile as during her original blogging gig. It's hard to shake the impression that the traditional media banners for which they now work have blunted their insurgent charm.
While we would’ve been interesting to see how Congdon could’ve developed as a web-type commentator vloggette, Ana Maria Cox probably got off the Wonkette bus just in time. She’d done all she could with her make-your-momma blush jokes and was ready for the big time.
