The eBay Factor

(AP)
First, there were the headline puns.

The latest tell-tale sign that Lisa Nowak's story will go down as an official, classic American media frenzy – bidding for Nowak paraphernalia on eBay is getting higher.

The Houston Chronicle spoke to one seller, Joachim Horvitz, whose autographed picture of Nowak's NASA publicity still, "one of thousands NASA hands out each year to promote the space agency," was fetching $1,825.50 late yesterday. Sisters Marci Halverson and Natasha Newman saw their "package of Nowak memorabilia, which included signed copies of the Houston Chronicle on the day of the crew's return," fetching bids of $152.50.

Said psychiatrist Carole Lieberman of the tendency for newsmakers to generate such sales: "It' s a really tragic trend. People aren't seeing newsmakers as people anymore. ... They become cardboard people."

But predictably, the very ingredients that made for a hot storyline have led to a backlash.

Barbara Jones, Master Of Understatement

What was your favorite astronaut pun this morning? Astronut? Dark Side Of The Loon? Lust In Space?

Regardless, I wanted to direct your attention to a comment included in last night's coverage of the Lisa Nowak story on the "Evening News." In the piece, which you can watch by clicking on the video box, Sharyn Alfonsi discussed how Nowak allegedly followed the woman whom she believed was her romantic rival into a parking garage. There, police say, she tapped on the woman's car window and sprayed her with mace. Nowak later said she just wanted to talk to the woman.

The story then cut to Sgt. Barbara Jones, of the Orlando, Fla., Police Department, who had this to say:

"I don't know that people want to be sprayed with any kind of mace when you want to have a conversation with somebody."
