Thompson Goes Nuclear

In a mirror image of infamous the anti-Goldwater nuke ad, Fred Thompson raises the spectre of dukes in a 17-minute video aimed at Iowa voters. Johnson warned about Goldwater's finger on the button; Thompson warns about bin Laden's, but with slightly less subtlety.

Sound bite: "Most Americans know that the forces of terrorism will not rest until a mushroom cloud hangs over one of our cities."

He also goes after his fellow Republicans and media with one swipe, bragging that when asked to raise his hand (the latest debate trick) he refused.

Sound bite: "If those other fellows can't stand up to an overbearing moderator in a debate, I'm not sure how they could stand up to the leaders of Iran or North Korea.... What you see is what you get. I dance to no man's tune."

He hits every conservative chime he can, saying that the Democrats are ruled by the radically secularist ACLU and -- here's the kick to the kidneys -- Michael Moore. But Thompson says he'll protect us from that.

Here's it's opposite number, the nuclear "Daisy" ad from Johnson's campaign:

The Taxman

Tax hater Grover Norquist asked the candidates to sign his no-tax pledge at the YouTube debate and here he gives his reaction, tweaking Fred Thompson for being refused and refusing to sign and then teasing John McCain for refusing to sign a pledge he signed back in 2000, "when he was a Regan Republican." A brass Ronnie looks on approvingly.

Ask Fred

Folksy Fred Thompson answers some voter questions while rolling through Central Florida:

Here he explains why he would have voted against the recent Medicare prescription drug coverage program.

Sound Bite: “We shouldn’t be adding on programs that make the solution even that much more difficult.”

And Fred’s no fan of the current tax system.

Sound Bite: “There are several good plans out there that move us in the right direction. And I think that we need to take ‘em, put ‘em on the table and see what we can do, with the underlying goal of doing away with the current tax code that’s an abominable mess.”

Hire A Babysitter, Fred

Don’t you hate those late night commercials when a furniture company owner or used car dealer drags out his kids or grandkids to deliver some unintelligble gibberish? Is there anything more annoying? Well, yes, there is. It’s when politicians use their kids or grandkids as props. Fred Thompson’s only been on the road for a week. Somebody please tell him the cute kid thing will get old really, really soon.

The Essential Thompson

Fred Thompson's campaign puts out one of those three-minute bio videos candidates do love:

Sound bite: "...it's where he learned the small-town values he still carries with him today. The son of a used-car salesman...."

Uh, no offense to Pere Thompson intended, but do we really think that used-car lots are where you learn the best values? Better than Washington, perhaps. Or Hollywood, for that matter. But used cars?

Sound bite: "He happened to meet a man named Ronald Reagan. A bond was born."

How long will it be before one of the candidates claims to be Reagan's illegitimate son?

Sound bite: "Fred Thompson isn't a professional politician."

So he didn't get paid in the Senate?

Sound bite: "A role only Fred Thompson can play."

All the world's a stage and all the politicians merely actors.
