Lieberman, Graham Fight To Ban Release Of Abuse Photos

(AP)
Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) held a press conference today forcefully pressing for passage of the Detainee Photographic Records Protection Act, which would prohibit the release of photographs depicting abuse of detainees by U.S. troops.

"To release the photos is, to me, sheer voyeurism," Lieberman said. "It's a disclosure without a purpose, and it's disclosure that brings great risk."

Lieberman said President Obama "did the right thing" in opposing the release of such photos last month. He said doing so would "lead to people entering the war against the United States."

"In our opinion, the release of these photos -- for no purpose at all, no good purpose -- will lead to the death of Americans, including, particularly, those brave Americans who serve us in the military," said Lieberman.

Graham suggested that the two senators would effectively shut down the Senate via filibuster if Congress does not pass the legislation. "We're not going to do any more business in the Senate," he said. "Nothing's going forward until we get this right."

White House Addresses Alleged Rape Photos

(AP/Washington Post)
A report in London's Daily Telegraph today, citing retired Major Gen. Antonio Taguba, alleges that among the photos President Obama wants to keep from the public are images that show American soldiers raping detainees as well as “sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.”

Both the Pentagon and the White House today disputed the report and criticized the newspaper from which it came. But they stopped short of suggesting that the photographs do not exist.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the Telegraph "has completely mischaracterized the images." He added: "None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, meanwhile, attacked the British press.

"If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I'm not entirely sure it'd be the first stack of clips I picked up," he said. Gibbs went on to say that "you're not going to find many of these newspapers and truth within, say, 25 words of each other."

Echoing Whitman, he also said that "none of the photographs in question depict the images described in the article."

But those comments leave some wiggle room.

Graphic Abuse Photos Emerge

(AP)
UPDATED Previously unseen images* showing what appears to be prisoner abuse on the part of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been revealed by an Australian television station, which reportedly acquired them following the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2006.

A slideshow of fifteen of the photos is here. Though portions are blocked out, they are extremely graphic.

Among the shots: A picture of a soldier and four nearly naked detainees, one of whom has the words "I'M A RAPEIST" written on his buttocks; a picture of a prisoner cowering while surrounded by dogs and soldiers with guns; a picture of a naked man with an unidentified white liquid coming out of his mouth; a shot of a naked detainee with eight large red welts slightly above his buttocks; a photo of a smiling soldier kneeling next to a detainee strapped down near the floor; a photo of a naked prisoner hanging upside down from the top of a bunk bed; a picture of a soldier who appears poised to punch a shackled detainee; and pictures of what appear to be the corpses of prisoners.

New White House Photos Of Obama At Work And Play

(White House/Pete Souza)
The White House has released a new set of photos by resident shutterbug Pete Souza that show President Barack Obama conferring with top aides in the Oval Office, hosting astronauts and dignitaries, and horsing around with Bo on the South Lawn.

Then there's this odd photo of the president letting the child of a White House staff member pet him on the head. Perhaps spending all that time with the new puppy is starting to rub off on him?

The photos are available to download and see at the White House's official photostream on flickr.

Administration Releases NYC Flyover Photo; Caldera Resigns

(White House)
In a move that comes late on a Friday afternoon – the traditional time to release news that one wants buried – the White House has released a photograph of the controversial Air Force One flyover that spurred panic in downtown New York City and anger from administration and city officials.

The photo, taken from a nearby F-16 fighter, is above.

The White House also announced that the Director of the White House Military Office, Louis Caldera, has resigned as a result of the controversy. Caldera took the blame for authorizing the $328,835 photo-op.

"I have concluded that the controversy surrounding the Presidential Airlift Group's aerial photo shoot over New York City has made it impossible for me to effectively lead the White House Military Office," Caldera said in a resignation letter. "Moreover, it has become a distraction to the important work you are doing as President."

President Obama accepted Caldera's resignation.

White House Keeping NYC Flyover Pics Under Wraps

(AP Photo/Jason McLane)
If a 747 and supersonic jet fighter buzz the Manhattan skyline as part of an ill-conceived photo-op, but the pictures are never released, did it really happen?

Perhaps the White House thinks not.

The photos of Air Force One's low flyover of Manhattan will not be released, CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller confirms.

The operation, carried out by the Defense Department and designed to capture one of the president's planes near national landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, sent panicked New Yorkers rushing from their office buildings April 27, fearful of a terrorist attack reminiscent of 9/11.

Tiger Woods In The White House

(White House Photo)
The Obama administration has released two photographs of Tiger Woods' Monday visit to the White House.

Staffers told the Associated Press that the president greeted Woods in the Oval Office, where the pictures were taken.

According to the AP, the golfer "got a tour of the White House from Marvin Nicholson, an Obama aide who once caddied at the Augusta golf course, where Woods tied for sixth place in this year’s Masters Tournament."

Woods was reportedly invited to the White House, and he wasn't the only athlete to visit on Monday: Members of the Chicago White Sox, the president's favorite baseball team, also stopped by. Here's one more picture of the Woods/Obama meeting:
