Obamas To Spend Weekend At Camp David

(AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)
President Obama and his family will take their second trip to Camp David over the weekend, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told the White House press gaggle today. They will leave the White House on Saturday and return on Sunday.

Camp David was a favorite retreat for Mr. Obama's predecessor. President George W. Bush spent 487 days there, and used the getaway for Thanksgiving celebrations and to host foreign leaders like Vladimir Putin and Tony Blair. The compound, located in Maryland's Catoctin Mountain Park, may become a regular destination for the Obama clan as well.

After visiting the mountain retreat last month, Mr. Obama pronounced it "beautiful."

"The girls just had a great time. They had a lot of fun," Obama told reporters following his first visit. "You can see during the summer it's going to be a nice place to spend a lot of time."

On his second trip on Air Force One, President Obama ventured to into press territory. The coatless president said his new plane was a "nicer ride" than his campaign planes and took a couple questions about his weekend at historic Camp David.

Mr. Obama said he enjoyed the presidential compound and said "you can see during the summer it is going to be a nice time." He noted that he looked forward to being able to hit a few golf balls and of course some basketball.

The first family was not alone during their first weekend at the Maryland retreat. Sasha Obama brought one lucky friend and the First Lady invited a friend and her two children.

"So it was nice," the president said.

Journalists aboard Air Force One were also visited by senior adviser David Axelrod, who was also coatess. He carried with him a printout of the latest Gallup poll whose results he was ready to discuss

"Strong support for this," Axelrod said. "[The] Gallup poll this morning reflects everything I've seen the last couple of weeks."

"One thing we learned over two years, there is a whole different conversation" going on outside of Washington, D.C. Axelrod said. Americans he said, "aren't sweating the details" of what the stimulus bill entails.

The confident adviser said, "we've got a good plan to deal with a deep crisis. The American people support it. We're urging everyone in Congress to catch up with the American people."

487 Days At Camp David For Bush

(AP Photo/Lawrence Jackson)
George W. Bush is today making his final visit to Camp David as president.

He will likely miss the place: According to CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller, today's trip marks Mr. Bush's 149th visit to the presidential retreat. The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.

Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there.
