Inside the Japanese White House

(CBS/Robert Hendin)
The traveling press of the White House press corps is pretty used to our White House, the big white building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC. It’s an old building, full of quirks, chipped paint and history. What used to be a swimming pool, used by past presidents, is now a tile-lined pit full of electronics and miles of cables for television. Above it is the White House briefing room.

So it was a rare treat yesterday for the press to see the Japanese White House. It’s not called that of course, it's called the Kantei and it is a complex that hosts the prime minister’s residence and an official office building. The U.S. White House itself holds the residence of the First Family, the press operations, and of course, the Oval Office itself. Other offices of the so-called Executive Office of the President are housed in various buildings around the residence.

The office building at the Kantei is an ultra-modern fete of architecture. A beautiful glass building that looks like a miniature Kennedy Center, instead of the stately, federal style White House that we know.

Following Obama: A Day in the Life of a CBS Producer

by CBS News Producer Kia Baskerville

Do you ever really wonder what it would be like to travel with a public figure?

One would think, "that might be kind of cool but not exactly worth the headache it could potentially cause."

Well, we all know journalists often find themselves on some extraordinary adventures, albeit some good and not so good, but one adventure I find an absolute thrill every time is traveling with the President of the United States.

There is a small contingent of journalists who follow the president where ever he travels outside of the White House whether it's overseas or across our great country or just around town. On a rotational basis five networks share the specific responsibility of recording his movement with a video cameraman, soundman, and a reporter/producer every day of the week.

This past Saturday, it was up to CBS to provide the service for the other networks (ABC, CNN, FOX, NBC).

In this video you will follow me through a campaign-style like day where the president travels to four states in ONE day. We visited Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona. Enjoy!
