Where Are The Potential Veeps?

As the waiting game for Barack Obama's running mate continues, the Associated Press tracks down some of the reported top contenders did today:

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine visited George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he watched his son participate in a Navy-Marine Corps ROTC program. Asked if he had signed up for the text message, Kaine said, "I haven't because I don't know how, but my son has.''

Sen. Joe Biden was at home in northern Delaware, where he met for about 30 minutes with his state director.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was in her office in Topeka, Kan., then left the Statehouse to address a meeting of Kansas AFL-CIO activists. She also planned to interview judicial candidates, meet with aides and prepare for the Democratic National Convention in Denver, her staff has said.

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh went to his twin sons' tennis camp in Washington and planned to return to his home in the District to spend time with his family, Bayh spokesman Eric Kleiman said.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton toured the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The senator planned to head back to her Westchester County house without a public schedule, said Jay Biba, regional director of Clinton's central New York office. She declined to say whether she had heard from the Obama campaign.

Texas Rep. Chet Edwards had lunch with his son in Waco.

So who's gonna get picked? Only time will tell.

VP Hot Sheet: Changes At The Top

Recent developments on the campaign trail have led changes at the top of both VP Hot Sheets today.

On the Democratic side, former Hillary Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson told Fox News that she is not current being vetted by her former rival for the spot. But note that he also pointed out that Clinton wouldn’t have to be vetted and that she would be a "great addition" to the ticket.

"I’m not aware of any formal (vetting) process," Wolfson, a Fox News contributor, said. "But, you know, Hillary Clinton has been vetted during the last 18 months… The Obama campaign is obviously very familiar with her record and background. She’s in many respects the most vetted person in America over the last 30 years, so I think that they probably have a pretty good sense of a lot of the information they need to make a decision about her."

With Clinton's fall, Kathleen Sebelius rises to the top of the Democratic list, for the moment at least. The buzz is with the Kansas governor of whom Obama recently said: "I love Kathleen Sebelius. I think she is as talented a public official as there is right now." She also is no longer denying that the campaign is vetting her, according to Congressional Quarterly.

In other news, Sen. Chris Dodd, a former Democratic candidate, admitted it in an interview with the Associated Press that he is being vetted by the campaign. "There's been some inquiries, yeah," he said. "They ask for a lot of stuff. I'll leave it there."

On the Republican side, Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and McCain's rival for the nomination, returns to the top, emerging as a heavy favorite at this stage of the game. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, the former leader, appeared with McCain in Minnesota yesterday, but also indicated he was not currently being vetted. (his exact words: "I'm not aware that I'm under consideration.")

CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports Pawlenty is still under consideration and will be vetted soon enough, but the buzz right now is definitely with Romney.

Rice Pours Cold Water On Veep Speculation

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is looking to tamp down on speculation that she is campaigning to become presumptive GOP nominee John McCain's running mate. Rice said today that she will likely return to Stanford University, where she served as Provost and remains a professor, after her present work is done.

"I very much look forward to watching this campaign and voting as a voter," Rice said. "I have a lot of work to do and then I'll happily go back to Stanford."

Some background: Back on March 26th, we reported that the Secretary of State made an appearance at a high-powered Republican gathering run by Grover Norquist. The appearance prompted a tipster to Steve Clemons to say, "Someone like Condi Rice doesn't go to Grover Norquist's den to talk about the Annapolis Middle East peace process. She's going to secure her future in Republican politics and to position herself as a 'potential' VP candidate on the McCain ticket."

The Condi veep speculation didn't immediately take off, but it got a big boost on Sunday, when Republican strategist and former Bush administration official Dan Senor suggested on ABC that Rice has been "actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for" the number two slot. He cited her appearance at the meeting as evidence of her alleged behind-the-scenes campaign.

Rice's interest in the job may not matter all that much: Sources tell CBS News that the McCain campaign has thus far shown little enthusiasm at the prospect of a McCain/Rice ticket. Watch Rice's comments on the veep talk below:

Is Rice Positioning Herself As A Possible Veep Pick?

(AP)
There is a tantalizing new tidbit in the speculation over who will be John McCain's vice presidential pick: Steve Clemons reports that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is speaking at a high-powered Republican gathering run by Grover Norquist this morning.

Why is this significant? According to Clemons' tipster: "Someone like Condi Rice doesn't go to Grover Norquist's den to talk about the Annapolis Middle East peace process. She's going to secure her future in Republican politics and to position herself as a 'potential' VP candidate on the McCain ticket."

McCain's veep pick will come under particular scrutiny because of his age – he would be 72 when sworn in, the oldest president ever to enter the office. That fact has led to speculation that McCain will choose a young running mate – possibly, as the Associated Press reported yesterday, 47-year-old Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.

McCain has other considerations as well, however. Conservatives skeptical of McCain are looking for him to pick someone to shore up their support – perhaps former rival Mitt Romney, with whom, it's worth noting, he had an acrimonious relationship on the campaign trail. Other names on thought to be on the short list include another former rival, Mike Huckabee, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
