New Ad: Clinton Has More Votes Than Any Primary Candidate In History

Over the weekend, the Clinton campaign released a new television ad, "17 Million," that stresses the number of votes Clinton has received in primaries thus far.

Clinton maintains that she holds the popular vote lead in the battle for the Democratic nomination, despite trailing Barack Obama in overall delegates. The Obama campaign disputes that characterization, which depends on excluding caucus states and not awarding any "uncommitted" votes to Obama from Michigan, where he was not on the ballot.

The new spot begins airing today in Montana and South Dakota, where voters go to the polls tomorrow.

“Tuesday, it’s up to you," an announcer says as the spot opens. "You can join over 17 million people who’ve voted for a leader to fix the economy. 17 million for a Commander in Chief to bring our troops home from Iraq. 17 million who want to beat John McCain."

"17 million Americans have voted for Hillary Clinton, more than for any primary candidate in history," he continues. "Some say there isn’t a single reason for Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic nominee. They’re right. There are over 17 million of them."

Daschle Pushes Obama, Clinton Pushes Fiscal Responsibility In New Spots

The South Dakota ad battles are on.

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are out with new television ads in the state, where voters go to the polls next Tuesday, June 3rd, the last primary day on the calendar.

Obama's spot features former Senate Democratic leader and South Dakotan Tom Daschle, who talks about the struggles those in the state are facing due to the costs of gas and groceries. The spot appears designed to counter the criticism that Obama is out-of-touch with blue-collar values.

"He's rooted in the same values as most South Dakotans," Daschle says of Obama. "He has an understanding of America, rural and urban alike. He will talk to us straight. We've needed that in this country for a long time."

Clinton's South Dakota spot, "Responsibility," opens with a knock on President Bush.

"We are nine trillion dollar debt," Clinton says as the spot opens, after which an announcer adds: "George Bush's spending has sent the economy into a tailspin and put social security in jeopardy."

Clinton then states, "We borrow money from the Chinese to buy oil from the Saudis." The announcer follows with a promise that "Clinton will stop spending money America doesn't have. She'll end fifty five billion dollars in giveaways to corporate special interests, reduce the deficit and protect Social Security."

Clinton then vows to "get us back to fiscal responsibility."

Clinton is also out with a sixty-second radio ad in the state criticizing those who suggest that the Democratic race is over. In it, an announcer says, "just because South Dakota comes last in the primaries doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be heard loud and clear." Read the full script below.

Clinton Out With Ad Signaling She Will Stay In Race

There has been speculation that Hillary Clinton might drop out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination following today's primaries in Kentucky and Oregon, even as Clinton herself has insisted that she will fight on.

Now her campaign has released a new ad in South Dakota, where voters don't have their say until June 3rd. It's a signal that Clinton has no plans to leave the race anytime soon – one that the campaign underlines in its press release touting the ad, which notes that the spot "comes two weeks before South Dakota voters head to the polls."

The 30-second ad, "Falling Through," opens with a shot of Clinton giving a speech.

"The Bush economy is like a trapdoor," Clinton says. "Too many families are one pink slip, one missed mortgage payment, one medical diagnosis away from falling through and losing everything."

"The oil companies, the predatory student loan companies, the insurance companies and the drug companies have had seven years of a president who stands up for them," she continues. "I intend to be a president who stands up for all of you."
