Huckabee Says He’s Not Going To Ohio For VP Announcement

CBS News’ Joy Lin reports:

(NEW YORK) As rumors swirl about John McCain's VP pick, there are reports out that former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee may be in the mix, despite his statements to the contrary. Asked about his whereabouts, Mike Huckabee told CBS News: "Same place tonight and tomorrow. In Arkansas. What’s funny is that networks are reporting that I’m ‘on my way to Dayton.’ None of them bothered to ask me."

Where Are The Potential Veeps?

As the waiting game for Barack Obama's running mate continues, the Associated Press tracks down some of the reported top contenders did today:

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine visited George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he watched his son participate in a Navy-Marine Corps ROTC program. Asked if he had signed up for the text message, Kaine said, "I haven't because I don't know how, but my son has.''

Sen. Joe Biden was at home in northern Delaware, where he met for about 30 minutes with his state director.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius was in her office in Topeka, Kan., then left the Statehouse to address a meeting of Kansas AFL-CIO activists. She also planned to interview judicial candidates, meet with aides and prepare for the Democratic National Convention in Denver, her staff has said.

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh went to his twin sons' tennis camp in Washington and planned to return to his home in the District to spend time with his family, Bayh spokesman Eric Kleiman said.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton toured the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The senator planned to head back to her Westchester County house without a public schedule, said Jay Biba, regional director of Clinton's central New York office. She declined to say whether she had heard from the Obama campaign.

Texas Rep. Chet Edwards had lunch with his son in Waco.

So who's gonna get picked? Only time will tell.

Obama Has Chosen His Running Mate – But He's Not Saying Who It Is

Barack Obama this afternoon told USA Today that he has decided who he will ask to join him on the Democratic ticket.

Obama, who has vowed not to identify his running mate until his supporters have been alerted via email and text message, declined to say whether he has informed the potential running mate of his decision.

"I won't comment on anything else until I introduce our running mate to the world," he told the newspaper. "That's all you're going to get out of me."

Pressed by reporters on the question at a campaign stop in Emporia, Virginia, Obama repeated that point.

"I did say that I've made the selection and that's all you're going to get," he said.

The presumptive Democratic nominee told USA Today his decision had been a difficult one, because "[w]e had some great choices."

Obama has said he wanted a running mate who is prepared to be president and "who can push against my preconceived notions and challenge me so we have got a robust debate in the White House."

DNC Web Site: Possible McCain Running Mates Are "The Next Cheney"

The Democratic National Committee unveiled a Web site this morning spotlighting seven people discussed as potential running mates for John McCain: Eric Cantor, Charlie Crist, Carly Fiorina, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Fred Smith and John Thune.

In a press release, the DNC write that the purpose of the site, called "The Next Cheney," is to illustrate "the most important thing the voters need to know about each of John McCain's potential vice presidential picks: no matter who he chooses, any ticket with John McCain on it means more of the same."

Visitors to the site are offered critical information about each of the potential veeps – they can "Learn more about Pawlenty's ethics violations," "Crist's admiration for Bush," or "Romney's position changes," for example. Clicking on the links takes media reports and other documents painting each politician in an unflattering light.

The site prominently quotes McCain telling Cheney in 2001, "With a little more luck, I might have been able to ask you to be my Vice-President." It will be updated with information about additional vice presidential candidates in the coming days, according to the DNC release.

UPDATE: Republican National Committee Spokesman Alex Conant responds to the site: “The irony is that Obama – not McCain – voted for Cheney’s energy bill. While everyone else is debating the all-too-real energy crisis, it’s good to see Democrats are obsessing over hypothetical political match-ups. The DNC is having fun with Washington parlor games, but the rest of the nation is debating the merits of McCain’s ‘all-of-the-above’ energy plan versus Obama’s ‘inflate-your-tires’ approach.”

VP Hot Sheet: Cantor Takes Off

Weekend revelations that Congressman Eric Cantor has been asked to provide information to John McCain’s campaign has catapulted the relatively unknown Virginian up and onto the list of potential candidates on the CBSNews.com GOP VP Hot Sheet.

Cantor is a favorite of conservatives McCain would like to shore up in advance of his convention and, at 45, would bring some youthful exuberance to the ticket. But tapping him would also require a mammoth introductory roll-out by the campaign at a time when the bulk of the attention should be on the top of the ticket. After all of the talk of Barack Obama’s interest in Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, this boomlet has a reactionary feel to it.

Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty continue to top the GOP list and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina cracks the top ten after the buzz surrounding her possible selection continues. If McCain wants to make an overture to women voters who feel slighted by Hillary Clinton’s primary defeat and bolster his economic credentials, Fiorina appears to be the front-runner. Meanwhile, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin slips to the number ten spot after the state legislator appointed a special investigator to look into allegations that she used her office to try and fire her former brother in-law. For all the latest buzz, check out the GOP VP Hot Sheet.

VP Hot Sheets: Surrogate Rewards And Hazards

Gone are the days when the relationship between John McCain and Mitt Romney was testy enough for the former to use a pig metaphor to describe the latter.

It's safe to say that Romney's increasingly frequent public appearances on behalf of the McCain campaign have struck a chord with the Arizona senator.

At a fundraiser in Detroit on Friday, McCain had some particularly radiant words for his former arch-nemesis and Romney's wife Ann: "Mitt has been on the shows, not only defending, but standing up for the things that we believe in, are important to the future of the country. And I think you may know that Cindy and I and Mitt and Ann had the chance to spend some time together. And I knew Mitt, and I knew what an outstanding individual he is and what a wonderful family person, but I hadn’t had the chance to get to know Ann, who we all know is battling a disease and she is a woman of courage and beauty and grace."

The presumptive Republican nominee may be spot-on in declaring that Romney has been doing a better job helping out the McCain campaign than he did for his own presidential run, but not every McCain surrogate has been doing so well on TV.

Veepstakes Watch

The question of the summer remains who Sens. McCain and Obama will pick to be their running mates. But almost as important as who the presumptive nominees choose will be when they choose them.

It's a question that doesn't have an easy answer for either campaign, especially since the Olympics figure to steal a lot of attention for the two weeks before the conventions. As The New York Times reports, McCain might have the advantage of waiting to see who Obama picks first before making his selection.

Wednesday morning brings some changes on both the Democratic and Republican sides of the CBSNews.com VP Hot Sheets

Among the Democratic vice presidential hopefuls, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius received some especially warm praise from Obama, but Hillary Clinton maintains the top ranking after her performance in Unity.

And on the Republican side, Mitt Romney's buzz meter cranks up a notch thanks to a Politico scoop, and a couple of lesser known contenders move up on the list.

Movement At The Top Of Republican VP Hot Sheet

There has been some movement at the top of the CBSNews.com Republican VP Rankings with Tim Pawlenty taking over the top spot on the Hot Sheet from Mitt Romney. The move comes not because Romney has done anything to hurt his chances but is instead a reflection of the fact that the hype surrounding Pawlenty has never been higher.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is also generating new buzz, while Tom Ridge slips a bit in the new rankings.

Biden: Don't Ask…But If You Do, I'll Say "Yes"

On Sunday's "Meet The Press," Delaware Sen. Joe Biden gave an interesting response to what has become the question of the season: Would he like to serve as a vice-presidential candidate?

Biden said that he does not want to be offered the job, but if he were asked, he'd have to accept.

"If the presidential nominee thought I could help him win, am I going to say to the first African-American candidate about to make history in the world that, 'No, I will not help you out like you want me to?'" Biden said. "Of course I'll say yes."

Also on Sunday, an article in The New York Times "Week In Review" section drew attention to the fact that former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn's name has been floated as a potential Democratic running mate since 1984. Dubbing him "The Great American Float," the article also points out that Nunn left the senate over 10 years ago and has never even said that he wanted the job, making him symbolic of the guesswork that goes into the VP speculation game.

Hagel Says He'd Consider An Obama VP Offer

Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said in an interview with the Associated Press that he would consider accepting an offer to be Barack Obama's running mate, if asked.

Hagel, who has been a vocal critic of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq, added that he doesn't expect to be on a presidential ticket. Still, the Nebraska senator's non-denial of interest is sure to add fuel to the fire of those calling for Obama to pick a Republican to balance the ticket.

"If it would occur, I would have to think about it," Hagel said. "I think anybody, anybody would have to consider it. Doesn't mean you'd do it, doesn't mean you'd accept it, could be too many gaps there, but you'd have to consider it, it's the only thing you could do. Why wouldn't you?"

In his book, "America: Our Next Chapter," Hagel said that the decision to go to war in Iraq was "the triumph of the so-called neoconservative ideology, as well as Bush administration arrogance and incompetence."

Hagel, a Vietnam veteran who hasn't endorsed either Obama or McCain, told the AP he hasn't thought about who he'll vote for in November.
