Bill Clinton And Obama (Finally) Talk

There has been much discussion of Bill Clinton's reported anger towards presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Clinton issued a tepid statement through a spokesman in support of Obama, prompting speculation that the former president would not soon get over the wounds of the long primary battle between Obama and his wife Hillary Clinton.

Prior to today, CBS News has learned, Obama has been trying to reach Clinton, but the former President had not been returning the presumptive Democratic nominee's calls.

Now comes word that Obama and Clinton are at least on speaking terms. The Illinois senator called the former President around 10 am this morning, during his drive from Kansas City to Independence, Missouri. Clinton took the call, and the two spoke for approximately 20 minutes.

“Senator Obama had a terrific conversation with President Clinton and is honored to have his support in this campaign," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "He has always believed that Bill Clinton is one of this nation’s great leaders and most brilliant minds, and looks forward to seeing him on the campaign trail and receiving his counsel in the months to come."

Matt McKenna, Director of Communications for Clinton, also released a statement.

"President Clinton had a very good conversation with Senator Obama today," he said. "He renewed his offer to do whatever he can to ensure Senator Obama is our next President."

"President Clinton continues to be impressed by Senator Obama and the campaign he has run, and looks forward to campaigning for and with him in the months to come," added McKenna. "The President believes that Senator Obama has been a great inspiration for millions of people around the country, and he knows that he will bring the change America needs as our next President."

McCain Weighs In On Early Morning Phone Call Debate

As you may have noticed, the Democratic presidential candidates seem to be extremely interested in what might happen at 3:00 in the morning.

First Hillary Clinton put out an ad suggesting that she was best prepared to handle a phone call to the White House at that time of night – when, incidentally, "your children are safe and asleep!"

Then Barack Obama put out his own ad, arguing that he's the one best able to protect your children at 3 a.m.. And Clinton subsequently responded to that one.

One politician who had not weighed in on the 3 a.m. issue, however, is presumptive GOP nominee John McCain. Until now.

As the Associated Press reports, McCain said today that he's the one you want answering that early morning phone call.

`I would believe that my knowledge and experience and background clearly indicates that if the phone rang at 3 a.m. in the White House, and I was the one to answer it, I would be the one most qualified to exercise the kind of judgment necessary to address a national security crisis,'' McCain said.

``I've been involved in every major national security challenge for the last 20 years that has faced this country,'' he added. ``I look forward to having that debate as to who's most qualified in the event of a national crisis and the phone ringing at 3 a.m. in the White House.''

Obama Responds To Provocative Clinton Spot

Hillary Clinton's campaign released a provocative ad earlier today in Texas asking the question: When your children are asleep at 3 am and a phone is ringing in the White House, who do you want picking up the phone?

"Your vote will decide who answers that call," an announcer said in the ad, which you can watch here. "Whether it's someone who already knows the world's leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world."

Now the Obama campaign has released a response to the Clinton spot. Using a similar setup – the 3 am phone call, the children asleep – the ad makes this argument:
When that call gets answered, shouldn’t the president be the one – the only one – who had judgment and courage to oppose the Iraq war from the start… Who understood the REAL threat to America was al-Qaeda, in Afghanistan, not Iraq. Who led the effort to secure loose nuclear weapons around the globe… In a dangerous world, it’s judgment that matters.

Giuliani Stops Speech For Call From Wife

Former mayor Rudy Giuliani was interrupted during his speech to the NRA by a ringing cell phone – his own, reports CBS News' Ryan Corsaro and Scott Conroy.

“It’s my wife,” he told the audience, and answered the call. “Hello dear, I’m talking to the NRA right now. Would you like to say hello?”

Several members of the audience laughed at the exchange and applauded when Giuliani told her he loved her and promised to call back.

A spokesman for the Giuliani campaign would not say whether the call was planned or not. However, rival candidate Mitt Romney’s press secretary Kevin Madden told CBS News the phone call looked “scripted.”

The Romney campaign provided a YouTube link showing Giuliani doing the same thing at an event in June.

"It's my wife on the phone," Giuliani said to the crowd at a June 21 campaign stop in the heavily Cuban-American city of Hialeah, Florida. "I'll call you back," he continued. "OK, dear. I love you. Bye."

Giuliani speaks tonight at a local GOP conference in Mackinac Island, Michigan.
