Suspense About To End On McCain VP Pick

(DAYTON, OHIO) -- John McCain is expected to announce his running mate today at the Ervin J. Nutter arena here on the campus of Wright State, but so far he has kept quiet about who that choice is. Mitt Romney is the top choice of Republican delegates for the job, with 38 percent hoping McCain picks him for VP, according to a CBS News poll, but CBS News has learned that Romney will not be in Dayton this morning, which would appear to cross him off the VP list.

Even though he only garnered 4 percent of the delegates polled, Tim Pawlenty’s stock has risen in recent weeks, and the Minnesota governor has cleared his schedule for the next couple of days (as have other top VP choices). But Pawlenty told the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis he would not be joining McCain in Dayton today. "I'm not going to be there,” Pawlenty said. “I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that."

Romney’s Exit Was Surprise To Supporters, Staffers

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Minutes before Mitt Romney suspended his presidential campaign at the Conservative Political Action Committee, staffers were still hanging campaign signs and balloons in the ballroom.

Just before Romney's speech, I spoke to a lower level staff member who refused to believe me when I told him about the reports of what was about to happen.

Romney: “This Campaign’s Going On”

BOSTON -- If there was any doubt, Mitt Romney cleared it up. The former Massachusetts governor is not giving up his fight for the Republican nomination tonight.

“Ann came to me, and she said, ‘You know, the one thing that’s clear tonight is that nothing’s clear,’” Romney said to hundreds of cheering supporters in Boston. “But I think she’s wrong. One thing that’s clear is this campaign’s going on!”

Romney’s Ready For A Hot Bath After Voting

BOSTON -- After casting his ballot in his hometown of Belmont, Massachusetts, Mitt Romney was looking forward to spending a few hours at home for the first time since Christmas.

“We have a lot of mail,” he said to reporters as his wife Ann stood at his side. “And you know, a hot bath, what do you think Ann?”

“Sounds good,” Mrs. Romney replied.
