In Church, McCain Unwittingly Becomes Part of Sermon

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley:

(PHOENIX) – Seeing yourself talk about the break-up of your marriage on the big screen is probably not what John McCain expected when he went to church this morning.

But that’s exactly what happened at the North Phoenix Baptist Church today, when Pastor Dan Yeary played a clip from Rick Warren’s interview with McCain last weekend where he asked him what his “greatest moral failing” was.

Obama Explains Why He Left His Church

From CBS News' Allison O'Keefe:

ABERDEEN, S.D. -– Barack Obama came before his traveling press corps this evening to discuss a letter he sent to Rev. Otis Moss of Trinity United Church in which Obama told Moss that with “sadness” he and his wife Michelle will no longer be members of the congregation.

It was an obviously trying decision for the candidate who paused reflectively throughout the 30-minute press conference.

Obama said that following what he called the Rev. Jeremiah Wright “incident,” he had a long conversation with his wife Michelle and they came to the conclusion that it was going to be “very difficult to maintain membership there” as long as he was running for president.

Campaigning In Puerto Rico, Clinton Stays Neutral on Its Political Status

(CBS)
From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

HORMIGUEROS, P.R. -- During a morning church service, Hillary Clinton told a group of parishioners that she is glad that she did not listen to naysayers who have called for her to step aside in the race.

“If I had listened to those who have been talking in the last several months, we would not be having this campaign in Puerto Rico today,” she told churchgoers in this small town a few hours outside of San Juan.

Thompson Goes to Church

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley:

MIAMI – Fred Thompson will be speaking at the Iglesia El Rey Jesus Sunday service tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., the campaign recently announced. This is Thompson's first public campaign stop at a church since he jumped into the race in September.

One of the largest Hispanic churches in Florida, making the stop serves three purposes for Thompson: reaching out to a Spanish-speaking audience, shoring up his religious credentials (which had been called into question after he said he didn’t regularly attend church), and appealing to religious conservatives who might prefer his opponent Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister.

Thompson is in Miami for the Univision Republican Presidential Debate, which airs Sunday night at 7pm.
