Palin Warns Of “Perfect Storm” Of Economic Woes

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(GREEN BAY, Wisc.) In brief remarks before introducing John McCain at the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, Sarah Palin said that four damaging economic elements had combined to form a “perfect storm” or economic woes for the nation.

“Times are tough right now across our country and Americans are facing kind of elements of a perfect storm that we’ve got to make sure don’t all come together at this time,” she said. “High taxes, that’s one of the elements that can result in a perfect storm that will not be good for the future of America. High gas prices, dependence on energy sources from foreign sources—foreign sources that don’t necessarily like America—they certainly don’t have our best interests at heart.”

Obama Slams McCain On College Affordability

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

TAYLOR, MI – Barack Obama took his economic tour to the next generation of workers today, speaking to students at Wayne County Community College about the link between the economy and education.

“Our economy is changing at a breathtaking pace. You need different skills to make a good living than you did twenty years ago,” Obama told the small group of students. “As folks in Michigan know all too well, young people today will be competing throughout their lives with people halfway around the world – in Beijing and Bangalore, Japan and South Korea.”

He presented his plan on college affordability, which includes a $4,000 tax credit for all students. Obama also had harsh criticism for his Republican opponent, John McCain, whom he accused of being out of touch with the working people.

“When it comes to education, Senator McCain is out of touch with the needs of hardworking Americans,” Obama said, “It’s not just that he doesn’t have a real plan to make college affordable; it’s that he’s voted time and time again to stop us from making college affordable.”

The McCain campaign quickly noted that he has been discussing his plan to reform the unemployment system and strengthen community colleges for over a year. Campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said McCain discussed the importance of community colleges in a speech in Memphis in April, 2007.

Earlier in the day, Obama met with a student from the college and her financial aid counselor. Marilyn Pace, who is studying to be a dental hygienist, said she is $1,500 short of paying her tuition due, in part, to high gas prices.

Pace said, “Gas prices being $4 a gallon and I can’t work hardly as much as I used to before and I’ve started using that money for gas money.”

Obama Kicks Off Second Week Of Economy Tour

(CBS)

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(CHICAGO) Barack Obama kicks off the second week of his economy tour today, with two stops in Michigan. Today will mark Obama’s third trip to the state since launching his general election campaign just a few weeks ago. He did not campaign in Michigan during the primaries.

Obama’s speech today will focus on the economy and global competitiveness. According to the campaign, he will unveil plans to improve the education system, reduce dependency on foreign oil, and pursue fairer trade policies. Although he will not unveil new policy today, his speech is intended to summarize his long term plans for the economy.

The speech on competitiveness will take place at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, a city that has been deeply affected by the economic downturn. According to a Detroit Free Press, article previewing today’s visit, the number of auto workers in Flint fell from 79,000 in 1976 to 12,000 today. Obama has focused on similar communities in the past week, as he continues to court middle class voters by emphasizing his plans to overhaul the economy.

The RNC has already issued a statement ahead of Obama’s speech, as they continue to paint him as a “tax and spend” liberal. RNC spokesman, Alex Conant, said, “Barack Obama is wrong: Raising taxes on small businesses and limiting free trade will make America less competitive – not more competitive. Obama can slap whatever label he wants on his tax-and-spend agenda, but it won’t create new jobs or promote prosperity.”

Obama Hits McCain on the Economy

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Barack Obama accused John McCain today of offering a tax cut plan which would bring corporations $2 trillion in tax breaks, including $1.2 billion for ExxonMobil, and will add $5.7 trillion to the national debt. As oil and gas prices reach record highs, Obama is beginning to portray McCain as the candidate whose policies will intensify the current economic crisis.

“At a time when we’re fighting two wars, when millions of Americans can’t afford their medical bills or their tuition bills, when we’re paying more than $4 a gallon for gas, the man who rails against government spending wants to spend $1.2 billion on a tax break for Exxon Mobil,” Obama said in his remarks on the economy today. “That isn’t just irresponsible. It’s outrageous.”

Clinton: "I'm Not a Show Horse"

(CBS)
From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Hillary Clinton returned to the Palmetto State after taking a few days to campaign in February 5th states and her message to voters this time was simple, "I'm not a show horse, I'm a workhorse and I will go to work for you." Although this veiled jab at Barack Obama isn't new, its revival indicates a plan by Clinton to push that message from now until Super Tuesday.
