McCain To Focus on Global Climate Change

After a weekend off the trail, John McCain will spend the next couple of days talking about global climate change. In a speech today at a wind energy training facility, he'll say that this issue needs global attention. He will also argue that creating incentives for businesses to shift away from fossil fuels can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions faster.

Nothing Wrong With Land Swap, Says McCain

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- John McCain responded to an article in the Washington Post today, which alleges that a land swap deal in Arizona that benefitted one of his contributors, saying he did nothing improper. “I worked for a long period of time with the mayors, with the environmental groups, and other interested individuals for a long period of time, including having town hall meetings,” McCain said, pointing reporters to editorials in a local Arizona paper which supported the legislation. “I am very proud of my record, I’m proud of the work we did in that land exchange, and I am proud of my environmental records.”

McCain Says He Voted For Bush, Jabs Obama

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Accused by blogger Arianna Huffington of saying he did not vote for President Bush in 2000, John McCain responded that her assertions were “nonsense.” “I voted, campaigned for, worked as hard as I could for President Bush’s election in 2000 and 2004,” McCain said. “With all due respect, this is hardly worth our time.”

McCain Honored As One of 100 Most Influential

McCain Visits NYC Firefighters

NEW YORK --John McCain brought lunch to firefighters in midtown Manhattan today, dropping in on Engine 54's garage holding four pizzas. "I brought lunch. Don't eat all of this yourself," he said as he handed the boxes off to the first firefighter who greeted him.

While Democrats Fight On, McCain Has Biggest Fundraiser Yet

NEW YORK -- The big names came out for the presumptive Republican nominee, giving him his best night in fundraising so far. Sources close to the campaign tell CBS News they took in seven million dollars at the sold-out event, which was chaired by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and included an appearance by Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump. The money will go to McCain’s campaign as well as to the Republican National Committee. Though he trails far behind Democrats in raising money, his numbers are improving. “The fundraising is decidedly better, but we recognize we have a long way to go,” said Jill Hazelbaker, McCain communications director.

McCain Jokes Around With Jon Stewart

NEW YORK -- On John McCain's 13th appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," the two men joked about the new members of candidate's entourage since he's become the expected Republican nominee.

"I cannot tell you the difference. Normally you show up. It's you, your bookie, a couple of other guys. You have a security detail now. This is serious business," Stewart said. McCain recently acquired protection but held off for as long as he could.

McCain Advocates for Religious Freedom

John McCain will reach out to social conservatives today, addressing religious freedom, human trafficking and internet child pornography.

“There is no right more fundamental to a free society than the free practice of religion,” McCain will say, according to excerpts provided by the campaign. “Behind walls of prisons and persecuted before our very eyes in places like China, Iran, Burma, Sudan, North Korea and Saudi Arabia are tens-of-thousands of people whose only crime is to worship God in their own way.”

McCain Urges Bipartisanship On Judges

John McCain said today he hopes cooperation among Republicans and Democrats can end the bitter fighting over the appointment of judges. “I think the gridlock of judicial nominees is a symptom of the gridlock in Washington on a lot of issues and Americans don’t approve of the job we’re doing right now,” he said. “I think it is another indicator that we need to sit down together and move forward with an agenda.”
