Al Qaeda Leader in Afghanistan Sends Message to Supporters in Turkey In Audio Obtained by CBS News

(CBS)
CBS News obtained a new audio statement by al Qaeda’s leader in Afghanistan Mostafa Abul Yazid, which appears to be a private message directed towards al Qaeda supporters in Turkey to ask for financial support.

“We, your brothers in Afghanistan, are sending you our greetings and would like to present you with some recommendations,” Abul Yazid said. He advised his interlocutor to treat Turkish Muslims well and be kind to them.

After a small introduction about financial support being a duty as jihad itself, Abul Yazid explains that the Afghani al Qaeda group was lacking “a lot of funds” and said this was the reason for the slowdown in operations these days. He points out that the militants are unable to carry out attacks because they have no money to do it with. Abu Yazid claims that the situation is so bad, that there are many men who want to carry out suicide operations, but “ we can’t equip them because of the shortage in funds.”

It is not clear when this tape was recorded, but it seems to be over six months old, as Abul Yazid refers to former U.S. President George W. Bush as being still in office.

Other al Qaeda leaders had urged supporters to donate money to al Qaeda in the past, like al Qaeda’s number two Ayman al Zawahri, who once asked Saudi supporters for financial support. Al Zawahri’s message was intercepted by the Saudi authorities in 2007.

Iraqi Insurgent Group Sends Message to Obama

The spokesperson for Iraqi insurgent group The Islamic Army in Iraq (ISI) said U.S. President Barack Obama can choose between withdrawing from Iraq and thus enjoying friendly relations with Iraq and other Arab countries and facing a vicious war that would drain the U.S. even more and enable Iran to strengthen its presence in the country.

Ali al Noeimy addressed the U.S. president in a 22-minute tape released on militant Islamist Internet forums by The Islamic Army in Iraq on Monday.

Al Noeimy started his message by analyzing the situation. “The single superpower status that America has strived to maintain for decades is now gone. America has lost its global leadership, its economy has collapsed and became casualty of the credit crunch, it gave other countries the chance to rebel against it and it is no longer capable of supporting its allies,” he said.

Al Noeimy accused former U.S. President George W. Bush of offering Iraq to the Iranians on a silver platter “without needing to fire a single bullet.”

“The arrogance and stupidity of the previous administration is what gave Iran today enough influence that could enable it to control Iraqi oil sources without spending a single dollar, or firing a single bullet,” said al Noeimy.

Al Noeimy was however optimistic about how things could be different under President Obama’s leadership.

“We look with eager anticipation to your decisions and your statements and also to your speech before the Turkish parliament. This shows us that you are at the beginning of the road so don’t break your promises to the American people or to the other people,” he said.

Kabul Attack 'A Message to Obama,' Says The Taliban

The militant Afghani Taliban movement said in an Internet statement today that Wednesday's attack on the jJustice ministry in Kabul was a "message to Obama and all intruding Crusaders." The group pledged tocarry out more such attacks in the future.

The statement gave more details about the operation, saying that 16 men from the "al Hamza" commandoes brigade carried out the attack on the orders of Taliban leader Mullah Omar to avenge the execution of Taliban prisoners at Kabul 's Pul-e-Charkhi prison during the celebrations of the Muslim feast of Eid-ul-Adha last December.

According to the statement, the attack began when a suicide bomber identified as Mullah Abdullah blew himself up at the gate of the prisons directorate in northern Kabul, thus enabling another Taliban member identified as Mullah Hafez Omar to enter the building and detonate his explosives belt into a group of army generals on the third floor.
Shortly after that, another member called Abdelfattah first opened fire on the guards positioned outside the ministry of justice, not far from the presidential palace, then carried out a suicide attack, said the statement.

Mullah Moussa Kleim, the leader of the operation, Mullah Assadullah, Hafez Muazullah and Mulawi Ahmed, all went inside the ministry, added the statement. The group claimed they were all killed after a fierce gun battle that lasted three hours, where "dozens" of Afghan security guards and ministry personnel were killed. From the 16 fighters who took part in the attack, the Taliban said eight returned safely to their base.

Finally, the Taliban also claimed that over 100 people, between ministry staff and security guards, have been killed in the operation.

Message Proposes Using “Suicide Dogs” in Operations

“Suicide Dogs” should be used as an alternative to human beings in suicide attacks, suggested a messaged posted on a militant Islamist website.
The poster accompanying the message suggested that dogs should be trained on running towards U.S. soldiers when they see them. This can be done by starving the dogs and only giving them food at the feet of a mannequin that would be dressed in a U.S. troops’ uniform, proposed the message. The mujaheddin should then strap explosives around the starving dog and detonate the explosives once it gets near the soldiers, said the statement.
“I know you might not like what I’ll say but believe me it’s better if a dog dies than if we lose a lion of Islam,” the poster said.
