Let's Talk Turkey

Well, it seems the minute Halloween is over, the holidays begin. My kids have been digging out the Christmas decoration at my house already, and, of course, making their lists of wants and wishes! And with the holidays from school today, we are actually hitting the stores in Manhattan to do a little shopping. Apparently, the bargains are there for the taking already because of the way the economy is going.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it has nothing to do with presents; its all about being together with family and friends.

I Still Love My School!

Congratulations to the Red Sox and all of the fans in Boston who are having a dream season this fall. The Patriots look like Super Bowl naturals and Boston College could be in the national championship game! Wouldn’t that be something?

(CBS)
And then there’s my alma mater, Notre Dame, having one of the worst football seasons in school history! Every fall my family takes a pilgrimage to South Bend, Ind., even though this year, my oldest daughter was questioning the wisdom of making the trip because Notre Dame was playing the powerful USC Trojans!
Click here to see some photos from my recent football outing.
I took the opportunity to explain to my kids that you have to love your team no matter what and that being a fair-weather fan is not being a true fan. Even though my daughter turned out to be right and we got hammered by USC 38-0, it was still great to be there on a beautiful fall day, seeing friends and cheering on the Irish... all the while dreaming of next season. It can only get better. Thank goodness we didn’t have to play this past weekend!

Ladies In Red

Today we did a segment of the rules for red -- what shades you should wear according to your skin tone. Red has always been a favorite color of mine. I think it started back when I was little. My mom always wore red lipstick, even to drive us to school. I tease her that if she were stranded on a desert island and could take only one thing, it would be that tube of red lipstick. I've always found it to be a great pick-me-up. There's nothing like a pair of great red shoes ... I even have red cowboy boots. And after a big heartbreak in my 20s, I actually went out and bought myself a red sports car. Man, I loved that car and it totally did the trick! I felt a whole lot better!

Gator Nation

For months, I have looking forward to my first foray into SEC football. Even though I was a sportscaster for 20 years, I had never had the chance to cover a huge football game down south. And since my alma mater, Notre Dame, is so bad this season, I figured this was my one shot to see a decent college game in person as Tennessee went into the swamp to face their archrival, Florida. The Vols got killed 59-20... but the fact that the game wasn't competitive was secondary.

Fan Friendly Football

(CBS/Hannah Storm)
On Sunday, I took my three young daughters to their first NFL game, making the trek to Giants Stadium to see the Jets take on the Patriots. As you probably know by now, I love football and have a great time sharing that with my girls, but I was a little nervous about how everything would go. I had vision of fans cursing and spilling beers on us -- that's all part of the game for some folks. But it turned out to be an amazing experience because of the fantastic fans that we were sitting in front of.

Cheney Rocks The Garden

(AP Photo/Jason DeCrow)
Country superstar Kenny Chesney is one of my favorite people and an incredible performer, as anyone who loves music knows. The leading ticket-seller in North America for the last few years running, he gives absolutely everything to the fans who are lucky enough to get tickets to his shows.

The Gracie Awards

(CBS)
Last night, my daughter and I attended The Gracie Allen Awards in New York City, which honors the work of women in radio and television. We had a great time and ran into a lot of old friends. My 8-year-old got a bird's-eye view of the red carpet and also acted as a photographer for the night.

The Greatest Gift

(CBS/Kate Morris)
The first birthday party I can remember was when my mom made a Little Red Riding Hood cake. I had a few friends over, ate some cake and lemonade and felt like the most special girl in the world.

Nowadays, birthdays have become big business. Crazy amounts of time and money are spent on both kids and adults. From clowns to bouncy castles and goody bags and magic shows, to renting out restaurants and nightclubs for hundreds of your best friends; it has become birthday mania.

Embracing Birthdays

So how do you feel about birthdays? I have some friends who dread them, some who ignore them, and some, like my friend Marci Waldman, who celebrate for an entire week!

(CBS/Kate Morris)
Marci, shown with me in the photo at left, is the Broadcast Manager at The Early Show and her birthday is today. Her philosophy is simple: The more presents, lunches and parties, the better! I definitely agree!
