The Brothers Affleck

I have never met Ben and Casey Affleck's mom, but if I did, I just might have to give the former schoolteacher a big high five. She sure raised a pair of good ones!

Osteen's Optimism

Today I visited with one of the most inspirational people I know -- Joel Osteen, pastor of the Lakewood Church in Houston. Osteen took over the old Houston Summit a few years ago (that was where we used to cheer on the NBA's Rockets) and he packs the house every Sunday with over 40,000 worshippers of all races and economic and social backgrounds. His reach even extends well beyond our shores to South Korea, Australia and points in between.

Although he has taken some heat for his relentlessly optimistic messages of hope, Osteen has been steadfast in his core belief that all of us, in every religion, are children of God and as such, we deserve happiness and peace.

Boy Meets Grill

Our favorite mornings around here are when we get to eat, and it doesn't get any better than when the food is prepared by our resident chef Bobby Flay -- the man who brought southwest cuisine into mainstream America. I remember buying Bobby's first cookbook, "Bold American Food," many years ago and marveling at the fact that there was actually life beyond a can of green chiles! It used to be that finding the ingredients for his recipes was an intricate task; I felt almost lost in a world of poblanos and anchos. But Bobby has demystified chiles and spices for me and a bevy of other American home cooks. In the summertime, we use his grilling books at least a couple of times a week, and now he's just released his seventh cookbook, "Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill Cookbook." As you may know, Mesa Grill in New York City is Bobby's first restaurant. It was one of the first places I ate when I moved here and, after 17 years, remains a favorite destination for people who visit this city. Today, Bobby whipped up a great fall meal that was gone in no time flat! Luckily, he always cooks extras for us because he knows he loves to eat. Lamb chops for breakfast anybody?

Seeing Nicholas Sparks

(CBS/Lauren Donohue)
Just before our interview, author Nicholas Sparks and I were laughing about how most of the year he is just another guy at home in North Carolina. But when he goes out on book tours he gets mobbed. Maybe it's a combo of his rural family life and his spirituality that keeps him so grounded. That is one of the things I like so much about him.

My pal Nicholas Sparks stopped by the show this week to chat about his new book, "The Choice," which is destined to hit No. 1 on the best seller list -- like all of his others. Nick and I got to be friends because we are both graduates of the University of Notre Dame. Not only do we commiserate over their football struggles, but we also volunteer a lot of time and effort on behalf of our alma mater.

I really got to know Nicholas better when I interviewed him for my book, Notre Dame Inspirations." What I find really inspiring about him is the level of commitment he has to others in both his family and his community. Nicholas lives in rural North Carolina and is an incredibly busy guy. He is a father of five, coaches a state championship track team, built and runs a school, works out like a fiend and is renovating his house. Oh yeah, and besides all of that he has managed to become the third best-selling author in the world! He always makes time to be a real friend and stay in touch.

Randy Jackson: Top Dawg

(CBS/Lauren Donohue)

Chatting with Randy Jackson about his solo album, which is due out in February. He worked with tons of different artists like Joss Stone and Mariah Carey. I can’t wait to hear it!
Click here to see more behind-the-scenes photos from his visit.

It was so much fun today seeing my buddy Randy Jackson of "American Idol" fame. Randy is not only super talented and smart, but he’s so down-to-earth and friendly. He visited The Early Show to chat about his battle with diabetes and his partnership with the American Heart Association to raise awareness about the disease he shares along with 21 million Americans. We also chatted about Randy’s new solo album and a seventh season of "Idol" as well as the album that he just produced for Boyz II Men.

and a few photos from his visit.

We also talked about the Grammys. With the 50th anniversary of the music awards coming up, help pick your favorite Grammy moment vy voting at My Night at the Grammys.

Rock Solid

The No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend was "The Game Plan" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I remember, as many folks do, when he was a big-time wrestling star! Now he's a full-fledged movie star, and does a great comedic turn as an egocentric NFL player who discovers he has a daughter. He even ends up doing ballet in the movie.

I ran into his co-star, Madison Pettis, over the weekend at the "High School Musical on Ice" world premiere. She told me "The Rock" was a doting dad on the set, quizzing her every morning about what she ate for breakfast. Check out our interview where this big guy turns to mush when he chats about watching the movie with his own 6-year old!

Boston Patriot: Toby Keith

(CBS/Hannah Storm)
Country star Toby Keith ended his concert Saturday night at the Teeter Center in Mansfield, Mass., with these words: "I’ll never apologize for being a patriot." This after an unabashedly pro-military encore, which included classic Keith songs "American Soldier" and "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" which he sang in front of military personnel he pulled onto the stage from the crowd below.

Fashion's Good Guy

(Mark Mainz/Getty Images For IMG)
We are winding up Fashion Week here in New York City. There are tons of designers and lots of shows, but there is one I never fail to miss: Carmen Marc Valvo.

Carmen has grown to be a friend over the last several years. I wear his gowns all the time on the red carpet. Not only do they fit great, they also look really appropriate for a news anchor in her mid-40's! And really classy, while being a bit sexy at the same time. The best part is that Carmen designs for real women of all shapes and sizes. His dresses sell like crazy because almost anyone can wear them -- not just stick-thin supermodels.

A Good Sport

As many of you know, I was a sportscaster for 20 years. I recently got to visit with an old friend -- Stephon Marbury of the New York Knicks. I really admire Stephon for what he has done off the court with his Starbury line of shoes and apparel.

Marbury grew up in Coney Island in a family of seven where there wasn’t spare money for expensive sneakers. He knows that a lot of families face this dilemma with their kids clambering for sneakers that can cost between $120 and $200. So Stephon has manufactured a line of shoes that cost just under $15 and they’re the same shoes he wears on the NBA court!

Check out our interview to hear more about his message to young people and his dedication to making a difference.
