It's E3 Time Again

It's that time of year again -- the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 -- though it's an event that was somewhat in doubt after E3 2008 proved underwhelming for many in the video game industry.
I wrote about last year's experience, and back then I wondered if E3 would ever be the same or even return again. The recurring concern for any industry trade show is how an annual gathering benefits the participating companies and attendees. Over the years, E3 was becoming so big and so filled with parties and, frankly, so overwhelming that it was difficult for some people within the respective businesses and organizing body, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), to see the value. Not to mention that key players like ActiVision started pulling out in 2008 and created a bit of a domino effect.

TED: Change The World With $100,000

The concept is simple; it's the execution that requires global collaboration and commitment. Not to mention some serious cash. Along those lines, TED prizes are an award of $100,000 given to a select group of recipients looking to change the world with one idea or "wish." They can use the money as they choose, and at a ceremony here Thursday night the three winners expressed their hopes for the future.

TED: Gates Releases Mosquitoes; Future Of Robot Wars

(Courtesy of James Duncan Davidson)
Bill Gates released some mosquitoes into the audience, a musical group called Naturally 7 demonstrated the diversity of voice, and “Happy Birthday” was performed in a way that the recipient of the timeless tune will never forget. Just another day at TED, one of the premiere (and exclusive) gatherings of visionaries, luminaries and “extraordinaries.” It’s a place that really requires one to open one’s eyes, ears, and mind.

Meet TED - The Intellectual Mardi Gras

(AP)
To call TED "elitist" makes it sound like snobbery. Not so. Instead, imagine a gathering peppered with dozens of futurists, artists, CEOs, and scientists -- plus a few more folks who defy categorization. They get all together for several days (Feb. 3-7) to listen to mind-blowing talks about everything from population trends to sea creatures. It is an intellectual Mardi Gras. The presentations are filmed, and they’re so compelling that they almost instantly go viral online.

This is the annual TED or the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference (those in-the-know just call it "TED"). Think World Economic Forum combined with a touch of the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital and maybe a hint of a G8 meeting for good measure. And it’s all riveting, mind-blowing stuff. In previous years the event was held in Monterrey, Calif., but this year it moves south to Long Beach.

A Look Back At CES 2009

I joked with people during CES that I'd need a week to really get perspective on the overall tone and tenor of the show. Now I think I'll need at least a month. Exhausting, yes, but everyone says that about CES. It has more to do with the lack of major crowds and the evolutionary vs. revolutionary nature of many of the products. In the meantime, I will say it was great to see many of my sci-tech colleagues and contemporaries and talk shop for a while or catch up on personal stuff. Even with fewer people in attendance CES is still an overwhelming experience and it's always nice to share the experience (commiserate) with those who can understand the pain from things like walking the seemingly endless halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center and Sands Expo. Maybe sleep will give me some clarity -- I think I've gotten about 20 hours all week. Was it worth it? Read on.

King Of The North

(CBS/Daniel Sieberg)
Hard to believe it’s been exactly a year since I traveled to the Arctic with our CBS crew – myself, producer Chloe Arensberg and cameraman Mark LaGanga. For those who remember our blog postings, you might also recall another passenger onboard that journey: my father, Doug. To mark the one-year anniversary, I’m posting a “video postcard” that encompasses both our time onboard the ship and some of my father’s history in the Arctic.

Grand Theft Auto IV

(CBS)
The latest chapter in the controversial – and popular – “Grand Theft Auto” series hits stores on April 29. It’s set in the fictional place of Liberty City, which looks exactly like New York. That’s already angered local officials who say the signature sex and violence in the game will give people the wrong idea.
