Black Holes, Creating The Universe, And The 'Blue Screen Of Death'

From fear over black holes to creating your own universe. From seeing back in time to the "blue screen of death." It's been quite a week. Curious?

E3 Reflections

Scaled back would be putting it mildly. Compared to E3s of the past, this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in the Los Angeles Convention Center was like a ghost town. I've been attending for several years (though admittedly I missed last year when it nearly disappeared off the map altogether). Now that I've had a little time to digest the event from earlier in the week, I have mixed feelings.

Bill Bows Out

After a week of taping the show I co-host for Discovery's Planet Green network (G Word, with me and SuChin Pak) I'm back in action here at CBS. But as I return to one job, Microsoft's co-founder Bill Gates is leaving his. Well, sort of. Friday is his last day as chief software architect, but he'll still remain chairman of the board and the company's largest shareholder. Plus, I'm sure he'll keep Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO) on speed dial.

Macro Look At Micro-Hoo; Teleported; V-Day Help

In a hurry here today but more tomorrow. A few quick thoughts: yesterday's BlackBerry outage was largely solved overnight but my CBS-issue device was still going haywire until mid-morning. During that time I used a different device to check my e-mail (rhymes with why cone) via a Web-based account. It wasn't great, but it sufficed in a pinch. Note to RIM: futher outages will only push people to experiment further with other devices, which can't be a good business plan. In other news, I plan to spend some time commenting on the proposed/rejected/scorned offer from Microsoft to buy Yahoo!. I realize there are many deeper considerations but one often seems overlooked: image.

Groundhog Day For E-Voting?

We're working on a story for tonight's Evening News about the sense of deja vu with electronic voting machines. Ever since the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002 newer touchscreens have faced increased scrutiny and concern from some security experts and academics. A few states -- including Ohio, Colorado, California and Florida are planning to abandon touchscreens and likely move towards optical scanner machines. As a Canadian (full disclosure) I'm not allowed to vote. But I can certainly understand the current problems and frustrations associated with every adult American's right to case a ballot. Where do we go from here?

Follow The Links -- If You Dare!

It's Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008. Approximately 253 days have passed since the season finale of "Lost" aired. But who's counting? In the spirit of my, I mean, that sci-fi-fantasy-mystery obsession may I present a little Web exploration. Actually, I have no idea how they're connected. Well, sort of. Anyway, as incentive there's a secret "Lost" site embedded in the words below. (Come on, play along and don't just drag your cursor over the links!) Ready, set, click...

Gee Whiz With 'gPhone'

So, let's just say that, maybe, perhaps -- for example -- you recently bought yourself an Apple iPhone, maybe, for example. Ahem. Am I, I mean, are you excited about the now official Google-esque phones? Or are you more ambivalent? Kinda confused about what they'll look like? You're not alone. Google announced its major foray into the mobile space Monday by (sort of) describing its Android mobile operating system. Will Android do to cell phones what Google did to Web searching?

Apple Fights Back From iPhone Hack

(AFP/Getty Images)
Remember the story about the New Jersey teenager who “hacked” his iPhone so that it would work on a network other than AT&T? For his effort, he got a car and three new iPhones.

And what did the buyer of his hacked iPhone get? According to Apple, a phone that can never be upgraded.

Microsoft + Facebook = More $$$

The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Microsoft is in talks to invest in Facebook by as much as 5%, which would value the social networking site at more than $10 billion. Wait, what? $10 billion?? That stake from Microsoft would reportedly be worth $300 to $500 million. It’s a somewhat complicated deal that would involve advertising, strategy and cross-platform stuff. But hang on. How'd this all happen so fast? Yet another sign of the times.

Together Again

(AP)
For the first time since 1983, Microsoft co-founder and Apple co-founder Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were together on the same stage at the same time.

Some people expected fireworks at this historic meeting which took place Wednesday night at the Wall Street Journal’s All Things Digital Conference in Carlsbad, California, but it was more of a love fest, writes Larry Magid.
