Report From IFA Show In Berlin

(Larry Magid)
I’m in Berlin at IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin), which bills itself as Europe’s largest consumer trade show. The event, which officially gets underway on Friday, is expected to draw more than 220,000 attendees, mostly from here in Germany. Exhibitors, however, are coming from all over the world -- 897 of the 1,245 exhibitors are from outside Germany. Unlike most tech shows, IFA is open to consumers as well as industry insiders.

West Coast Report On iPhone Mania

I've been at the Apple store in Palo Alto, Calif. all morning watching the crowds snap up the new iPhone. Some people spent the night in line but there weren't nearly as any people as there were on June 29, last year when Apple released the original iPhone.

Thoughts On 25 Years In Newspapers

It’s ironic. On the 25th anniversary of my start as a newspaper columnist, the very newspaper that gave me that start laid off 250 people, including 150 editorial positions. The layoffs didn’t affect me, I stopped writing for the LA Times in 2002 but it’s still sad to see colleagues lose their jobs and to see likely further erosion of quality in one of the world’s best media outlets.

Tiny Town Fights For Its Domain

“Dot.Com” is a charmingly funny and beautiful firmed comedy about a small village in Portugal whose residents are being threatened with an $800,000 lawsuit because the town’s Web site happens to have the same name as a trademarked brand of mineral water.

A Meter On Your Internet Service?

Just as Internet video is starting to take off, one of the nation’s largest broadband providers is experimenting with a pricing plan that could make it very expensive.

Last week Time Warner Cable started testing a $29.99 a month plan in Beaumont, Texas that gives users only 5 gigabytes of data to download or upload. Users who pay $54.90 a month have their service capped at 40 gigabytes.

CES Wrap Up

Describing CES is like a vacationer trying to describe Europe. You can’t see it all in one trip. Still, I was able to pick up on some trends including wireless video, increased use of touch interface, tech going green and the emergence of affordable high-end digital cameras.

Facebook & Personal Privacy

It seems as if personal privacy is becoming an endangered species. Almost all companies talk about privacy, many – including Facebook -- even have a “Chief Privacy Officer.” But as Facebook users found out recently when the company introduced its Beacon service, business plans and personal privacy can sometimes clash.

Data Loss Redux

We’ve had plenty of serious data losses in the U.S., including the incident in 2006 when a computer with data on 26.5 million living and dead veterans went missing because a Veterans’ Administration employee’s laptop was stolen from his home.

iPod Alternatives

(AP Photo/Microsoft)
I am as bothered by the market domination of the iPods as I am by Microsoft's Windows. And I find it almost amusing that people will rush out and buy iPods because of the brand name and marketing.
