The Curious Case of Steve Jobs

To begin, a disclosure: I do not, nor have I ever, owned any Apple stock. I do, however, own a few Apple products like an iPhone, a Shuffle, and Apple TV. But then it's hard to find someone who doesn't own an iSomething these days. I write all this to preface my comments about Steve Jobs' mysterious health problems. Just what is the truth about his situation?

A MacWorld Without Jobs

The announcement hit the tech world today like a ton of iPhones: Steve Jobs will not be appearing at MacWorld 2009 in early January and Apple is pulling out of future MacWorlds going forward. Everyone has an opinion on what this means and why it's happening. Theories range from the Apple company line (non-Apple trade shows are no longer necessary or relevant), to Jobs being unwilling to front a relatively newsless event, to a sign of the economic downturn, to a slow transition of power within the company to someone like Apple VP Phil Schiller, to (of course) the rumors about Jobs' health. Whatever the real reason(s) it's clearly a changing of the landscape. MacWorld has historically been THE place to witness Apple's big announcements and the most visible platform for its iconic CEO. It certainly leaves one scratching one's head. I'll try to post more thoughts on this tomorrow but in the meantime I'm curious to read people's comments.

iPhone 2.0, Firefox 3.0, Webbys 12.0

I can't believe it's been nearly a year since people lined up around the country for the original iPhone. Of course, in the end it made no difference whether you spent a week without a shower sleeping on a lawnchair on 5th Avenue or dropped by an Apple store three hours after the official launch -- everyone who wanted one managed to buy one. Steady if not overwhelming interest has remained, with Apple reportedly selling more than 4 million iPhones worldwide. And now comes the expectation that CEO Steve Jobs will use his appearance at the Apple Worldwide Developers' Conference on Monday in San Francisco to unveil the next generation. Call it iPhone 2.0. What's in store? Lots of speculation about 3G (much faster data), a GPS chip for navigation, and even a possible video camera. What else? Well, we won't know for sure until Jobs opens his mouth, but that hasn't stopped us from putting together a story about what he MIGHT say for Monday's CBS Early Show. I'll also be attending the conference in San Francisco and will report live on Tuesday morning with all the details.

The Thinness of Space

I'd never encountered British billionaire Sir Richard Branson in person, but on Wednesday I had the chance to attend a press conference where the seemingly oft-smiling magnate was present. What brought this high-flying business icon to the American Museum on Natural History on Manhattan's Upper West Side? The chance to reveal the latest design in private space travel vehicles with his colleague and aviation pioneer, Burt Rutan, via their Virgin Galactic venture.

How About Them Apples?

OK, so after the iPhone was released in late June I must say I felt pretty burned out by Apple mania. The hype and hysteria was everywhere and I was in the middle of it. That said, I did break down and buy an iPhone. I also bought a video iPod for my wife's birthday last week. After today's series of announcements I'm wishing that I'd waited on both purchases. Curse you, Steve Jobs. In my books, your timing is NOT impeccable.

Together Again

(AP)
For the first time since 1983, Microsoft co-founder and Apple co-founder Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were together on the same stage at the same time.

Some people expected fireworks at this historic meeting which took place Wednesday night at the Wall Street Journal’s All Things Digital Conference in Carlsbad, California, but it was more of a love fest, writes Larry Magid.

Lights, Camera...Resume!

If you're a job seeker without any leads, you might want to tear up that 8 1/2" X 11" sheet of paper, get out your digital camera and find your favorite video-sharing Web site. At least that's the advice from some experts and people like Trent Willis, who used a clever mock ad to land his dream job in politics.
