Report From IFA Show In Berlin

(Larry Magid)
I’m in Berlin at IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin), which bills itself as Europe’s largest consumer trade show. The event, which officially gets underway on Friday, is expected to draw more than 220,000 attendees, mostly from here in Germany. Exhibitors, however, are coming from all over the world -- 897 of the 1,245 exhibitors are from outside Germany. Unlike most tech shows, IFA is open to consumers as well as industry insiders.

West Coast Report On iPhone Mania

I've been at the Apple store in Palo Alto, Calif. all morning watching the crowds snap up the new iPhone. Some people spent the night in line but there weren't nearly as any people as there were on June 29, last year when Apple released the original iPhone.

A Meter On Your Internet Service?

Just as Internet video is starting to take off, one of the nation’s largest broadband providers is experimenting with a pricing plan that could make it very expensive.

Last week Time Warner Cable started testing a $29.99 a month plan in Beaumont, Texas that gives users only 5 gigabytes of data to download or upload. Users who pay $54.90 a month have their service capped at 40 gigabytes.

Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer Reminisce

(CBS/Larry Magid)
It was a joy listening to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer reminisce about the past as they sat on stage at the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things Digital Conference” in Carlsbad, California Tuesday night. Responding to questions from conference co-hosts Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, the two talked about the early days at Microsoft, their early worries about running out of money and their 28 year long working relationship at Microsoft.

Put Your PC To Sleep

(AP)
That PC on your desk could be a major energy hog. It’s not so much the electricity it takes to use it, but the fact that it might be wasting energy while you’re not using it.

A Fun Look At Online Safety

I’ve written a lot about online safety including my latest article about Myths and Tips but I don’t pretend that my writings on this subject are all that much fun.

However a very creative groups of video producers, directors and actors have found a way to lighten up this subject with two new videos at ConnectSafely.org, the non-profit Internet safety forum I help operate.

Online Sales Tax

I didn’t expect my recent column to go over well with a lot of readers because I’m proposing that states should have the right to require Internet merchants to collect sales taxes.

Will Consumers Benefit From Microsoft-Yahoo Deal?

As part of my work at CBS News, I do a lot of live “2-way” interviews with radio stations and naturally, I was quite busy on Friday after Microsoft announced its hostile takeover bid for Yahoo.

After explaining the offer as best I could, the anchor inevitable asked me if I thought it would change things for consumers and, if so, would be for the better or the worse?

Eye On MacWorld Expo

Now that the Consumer Electronics Show is over, the tech world turns its attention to San Francisco and the MacWorld Expo. As he does every year, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will kick off the event with his keynote address Tuesday morning. The room will be full of three constituencies: Apple employees, press and Apple aficionados. Some of those aficionados will be there with press passes because they’re also bloggers.
