Carla Hughes' Parents Beg For Her Life, Jury Responds

CANTON, Miss. - A Madison County jury of nine women and three men could have sentenced Carla Hughes to death for the brutal 2006 slaying of a pregnant woman who was her romantic rival.

But Carla Hughes' parents begged the jury to spare her life Wednesday during the sentencing phase of the capital murder trial. The jury listened; then, they sentenced Carla Hughes to prison for the rest of her life.

LOS ANGELES - Will Chris Brown soon be picking up your trash or will he be given celebrity treatment during his six months of community labor?

A judge on Tuesday sentenced Chris Brown, 20, to five years' probation and six months' community labor for the beating of Rihanna and ordered the R&B singer to stay away from his former girlfriend for the next five years.

Millionaire Who Faked Death Sobs in Court; Gets 4 Years

PENSACOLA, Fla. - An Indiana money manager who crashed his plane and parachuted to safety in an elaborate scheme to fake his death and flee financial ruin was sentenced Wednesday to more than four years in federal prison.

Marcus Schrenker, 38, sobbed and gave a rambling speech during a four-hour sentencing hearing. He apologized to air traffic controllers, his family, and residents of the Florida Panhandle town where his plane went down near some homes on Jan. 11.

Jury Recommends Life Sentence in "Alpha Dog" Murder

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Jurors recommended a life sentence Wednesday for Jesse James Hollywood for orchestrating the kidnap-murder of a 15-year-old boy – a crime that inspired the movie "Alpha Dog."

Jurors deliberated about two days before recommending life without the possibility of parole instead of a death sentence. The judge is scheduled to formally sentence Hollywood Oct. 21.

Victims confronted the man who became known as the worst sexual offender in the history of Rock County, in southern Wisconsin.

North Korea Sentences U.S. Reporters To 12 Years Hard Labor

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea convicted two American journalists and sentenced them Monday to 12 years of hard labor, intensifying the reclusive nation's confrontation with the United States.

Washington said it would “engage in all possible channels” to win the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for former Vice President Al Gore's San Francisco-based Current TV media venture.

BREAKING NEWS: Spector Gets 19 To Life

LOS ANGELES - Phil Spector was sentenced Friday to 19 years to life in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, who was shot through the mouth in the music producer's home six years ago.

Spector, 69, looked straight forward and showed no emotion as Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler ordered a term of 15 years to life for second-degree murder plus four years for personal use of a gun.

PADUCAH, Kentucky (AP) An ex-soldier convicted of raping and killing an Iraqi teen and murdering her family has been sentenced to life in prison in a case that drew attention to the emotional and psychological strains on soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
