Erin Moriarty: What Kind of Man is Phillip Garrido? Talk to His First Victim

(CBS)
NEW YORK - To learn what kind of man Philip Garrido is, all you have to do is spend some time with Katie Callaway Hall. Katie first encountered the accused kidnapper of Jaycee Dugard before Dugard was even born, back in November of 1976. That’s when Katie learned firsthand how evil and manipulative Garrido can be.

Remembering Dominick Dunne: His Niece Recalls a Remarkable Life

(CBS)
NEW YORK (CBS) From the time I was a child, my uncle, Nick Dunne, was larger than life – every bit as glamorous as the movies stars and Hollywood directors he lived and worked among. When he and his wife, the impossibly beautiful Ellen B (Lenny), came to visit those of us who still lived in Hartford (his mother Dorothy, great Aunt Harriet, Sisters Harriet and Virginia and Brother Dick) they would regale us with stories about their friends Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Kirk Douglas and Jimmy Stewart.

Erin Moriarty Remembers Dominick Dunne

(CBS)
NEW YORK (CBS) I last saw Dominick Dunne in a New York hospital. I walked into his room with some trepidation; after all, he was being treated for bladder cancer and I had heard ominous rumors about his ill health.

I should not have worried.

Dominick was, indeed, thin and a little pale, but as soon as he saw me, he launched into a colorful and lively discussion about a case we had both followed for years. Cancer be damned, nothing was going to get in the way of a good story!

Erin Moriarty: Will Fake DNA Spell Doom for Prosecutors? Don't Count on It.

( (AP Photo/Myung J. Chun))
NEW YORK - The headline in the New York Times this week was designed to shock and it did: "DNA evidence can be fabricated."

Since the mid-1990’s, when the O.J. Simpson murder trial in Los Angeles introduced the concept of DNA evidence to the public, it has become the "gold standard" of forensic tools - evidence considered so reliable that few question its results.

Erin Moriarty: Could Someone Make You Confess a Crime You Didn't Commit?

(CBS)
NEW YORK (CBS) Could someone make you confess to a crime that you didn't commit? C'mon. No way. People usually lie to avoid penalties. Why would someone accept responsibility and punishment for something they didn't do?

To most of us, it is inconceivable that even the most skillful police interrogator can get innocent people to, not only confess to a terrible crime, but actually believe that they committed it. Yet, we know it happens.

Erin Moriarty Blogs: Murder Dream Sent Young Man To Jail

(CBS)
NEW YORK - Ryan Ferguson is not getting out of prison anytime soon. His latest appeal was turned down by Boone County, Missouri Circuit Judge Jodi Asel, in a decision that was released this week.

If you watch 48 Hours Mystery regularly, it is hard to forget Ryan Ferguson or his 2005 trial in Columbia, Missouri. Ferguson was convicted, along with a high school friend, of the 2001 murder of Kent Heitholt, the Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor. What makes this young man’s case so memorable is that there was so little evidence against him other than a dream of his co-defendant, Chuck Erickson. Really. A dream that Erickson had two and a half years after the murder which led him to confess to the Columbia police.
