NEW YORK - Charlene Lugar, wife of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., has been charged with drunken driving and hit-and-run after hitting a parked car in northern Virginia.

Fairfax County Police say an officer stopped 76-year-old Charlene Lugar Wednesday evening at a McLean intersection after seeing damage to her car and smoke coming from the hood. Police later determined that she also hit an unattended parked car about two miles away from the traffic stop.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) A New Zealand woman had a novel defense when she appeared in court on a drunk-driving charge: it was swine flu's fault.

Business manager Deborah Karen Graham sought clemency for the charge in the southern city of Queenstown on Monday, saying the three glasses of wine she had consumed were more potent because she was recovering from the virus.

MADISON, Wis. Walking to a parking lot after seeing Dave Matthews Band live in concert south of Milwaukee, an Illinois teen knew he was too drunk to drive home. So he fell asleep in his car, only to be awoken by a state trooper.

Travis Peterson, 19, of Dixon, Ill., said even though he told the officer he was drunk and sleeping it off, the trooper ordered him to leave because the lot was being cleared.

Once out of the parking lot, Peterson was arrested for drunken driving.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Drunken Arizona drivers with the late-night munchies may soon be getting more than chicken strips at drive-through windows.

A new Pima County Sheriff's Office campaign dubbed Operation Would U Like Fries will target drunken driving by putting undercover deputies inside 24-hour fast-food restaurants to spot impaired drivers placing their orders.
