October 8, 2009 9:41 AM ROCKVILLE, Md. (CBS/AP) - No word if the sentence was ordained by god, but state prosecutors say the man who used an 18-pound crucifix to beat his estranged girlfriend has been ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison.
July 20, 2009 8:08 AM ROCKVILLE, Md. - A Maryland man has been convicted of attempted murder for beating his estranged girlfriend at least 20 times with an 18-pound crucifix taken off an apartment wall.
County prosecutors said last Thursday that 33-year-old Carlos Ovalle was also convicted a day earlier of burglary, stalking and two violations of a protective order.
Police say Ovalle broke into the woman's apartment in December and jumped out of a closet when she came home, trying to stab and strangle her.

NEW YORK - After uncovering a ventilation shaft trickling of blood, police discovered the body of a woman bound, gagged and taped with a gold crucifix to her mouth.
The body hadn't been identified, but police presumed it was that of Dominican-born Eridania Rodriguez, who hasn't been seen since her work shift Tuesday at the 26-story Manhattan tower. Rodriguez' street clothes and other belongings were found in her locker, and video surveillance didn't show her leaving the building.
