Katie Couric's Notebook: Dr. Tiller

(AP/Mike Hutmacher, Wichita Eagle)
The assassination of Dr. George Tiller in his Kansas church on Sunday was a realization of a threat he faced on a daily basis.

Tiller was one of just a few doctors in this country who perform late-term abortions. That made him a prime target for harassment and violence from abortion opponents.

At least three other providers have been killed since 1993, including Dr. Barnett Slepian, who was shot by a sniper in his home in upstate New York. Providers also have reported dozens of death threats, assaults and acts of vandalism.

Attorney General Eric Holder has sent U.S. marshals to protect some clinics and individuals, but there are still many practitioners living in a constant state of fear, and patients who face intimidation when seeking their services.

No matter what your moral position may be on abortion, Tiller was first and foremost a doctor and acting within the law. That should not have cost him his life.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Craigslist

(AP Photo/Mark Garfinkel)
With more than 20 billion page views every month, the classified ad site Craigslist is a threat to newspapers for sure.

But is it also a threat to public safety?

Right now a man alleged to be the Craigslist killer sits in a jail in Boston, accused of robbing and assaulting two women he met on that site - and killing a third.

It's not the first time something like this has happened.

Recently, a New York radio host was found murdered in his apartment. Police say he met his alleged killer on Craigslist.

Anyone surfing for sex assumes a certain amount of risk and personal responsibility, and Craigslist managers post plenty of warnings about scams and safety.

But the website also has a responsibility to enforce its own rules and curb offers for prostitution and pornography.

Whether someone is looking for Mr. Right, or Mr. Right Now, online personals should be monitored by the site and approached with caution by the user.

The CBS team had been speaking with Mikel Lauber, a reporter with CBS affiliate WSAW. Watch what happens next:

And check out some of the other videos from onlookers or participants in the conversation that they’ve posted on YouTube.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Washington Murders

The discovery by U.S. Marshalls of four dead girls between the ages 5 and 17 in a Washington, D.C., apartment didn't have to happen. It was a failure on the part of the city and its agencies that are responsible for protecting children in situations like this.
