Katie Couric's Notebook: Baseball

I'm Jeff Glor, Katie Couric is on assignment today.

I don't know about you, but our vote for father of the year goes to Steve Monforto.

Did you see this the other day? If not, go on line - that video is everywhere by now. Believe me, it will warm your heart.

Steve, a die-hard Phillies fan, was at a game the other night and caught a foul ball hit by Jayson Werth.

Steve was thrilled, and he wanted to share his joy with his three-year-old daughter, Emily. So, he handed her the ball to look at. Then, to his amazement, Emily threw the ball back toward the field.

What did Steve do? Did he get angry at the loss of his treasure?

No. He pulled his daughter toward him and gave her a big hug for all the world to see. He said later, "I didn't want her to think she did anything wrong."

Steve put his child first as all good parents do. The crowd cheered. And so should we.

Jeff Glor's Notebook: Human Faces

Ted Kennedy once said of his legislative work, "I look at all the causes I'm involved in with a human face, and I think that is what has been enduring and continuing and inspiring."

Today, so many of those faces - belonging to the thousands of lives he touched- are gathering in Boston at his brother's presidential library where the Senator lies in repose.

And there are many others: an 8-year-old girl in Washington who was the Senator's last reading buddy - a 9-11 widow who found strength in a man who was no stranger to tragedy - and the parents of a fallen soldier who joined forces with Kennedy to ensure that men and women serving this nation get the armor they need.

Senator Kennedy wrote 25-hundred pieces of legislation in his 46 years in office, nearly 47, and passed hundreds of them into law.

But the legacy is not the paper - it's the people, the individual lives that collectively mourn on this day.

That's a page from our notebook.

Jeff Glor: Staples Center Sneak Peek

CBS News National Correspondent Jeff Glor with a sneak peak at his piece tonight on the CBS Evening News.

Hi everybody on cbsnews.com. It’s Jeff Glor outside the Staples Center in LA, the morning before the Michael Jackson memorial service here. You can see this enormous white board, that’s been set up. Folks taking pictures out in front of it. And literally thousands of people have been coming by to sign this board all morning long. If we pivot across the street, you can see the Nokia Plaza, where there are layers and layers television cameras, and tv correspondents preparing for this service tomorrow. I’m told that to get into this area tomorrow, you need a blue wristband, like the one on my arm right there. That’s to just get into the area, not even to get into the service itself. Police are going to try to keep people back as best they can. Make sure this is a safe environment. A story we’re working on for the evening news tonight is on the cost associated with this service: both the money that’s going to be generated for the city of Los Angeles, but also the amount of money they’ll be spending. Hope to see you at 6:30 eastern time for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
See you then.

This Fourth of July, Thank Teddy Roosevelt

It’s impossible to examine the life of Theodore Roosevelt and not feel a certain degree of envy. The man was so prodigious in his pursuits and accomplishments it humbles everyone who comes close.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Madoff Letters

Katie Couric is off today. I'm Jeff Glor.

It's been six months since Bernie Madoff's arrest, but the anger his victims feel is still palpable and raw.

In anticipation of his sentencing on June 29th, they've sent 113 letters and emails to the U.S. District Court judge handling the case.

One of them wrote that Madoff's Ponzi scheme robbed her of "the most intimate of personal properties, the self-esteem and fruits of a life's work."

Another wished him not death, but longevity. A lifetime to see how he has devastated so many families.

As Madoff awaits his fate, a possible life sentence in prison, an investigation continues at the SEC - to determine how the commission could have missed a scam so big for so long.

There is little comfort for the thousands who were robbed of their livelihoods.

There is only hope that institutions they relied on to protect their hard-earned money might be able make them partially whole again - and prevent this from happening again in the future.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Iran Election

Hi everyone. Katie's off today. I'm Jeff Glor.

The message from protesters in Iran today is loud and clear, but it seems to be very different from the one at the polls last Friday.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators marched through the streets of Tehran to support reformist presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. They've been protesting ever since hard-line incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner by an almost two-to-one margin. It's a result many of them just don't believe.

But Ahmadinejad has his backers too. There's no proof the election was rigged. Although it doesn't help the government's case that police have beaten some of the protesters and the reporters trying to cover them.

Iran's supreme leader is promising an election fraud investigation. But, no matter who really won, the voice of the people crying out for change has been heard by the entire world this week. It might be very tough for the Iranian government to ignore.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Auto Dealers

(AP)
Katie's on assignment, this is Jeff Glor.

The waiting is over - 789 Chrysler dealers got the word today that they are out of business. That is a quarter of Chrysler's 3,200 locations.

For those getting the axe, the news hit hard and fast. Chrysler wants them gone by next month. Instead of having separate Dodge and Jeep dealers, for example, one will stay and one will go. There is no compensation and no appeal.

The dealers we spoke with are angry. Many spent millions on glitzy showrooms and put their homes on the line to stay in business. Many expect now to face bankruptcy themselves , and they worry about their employees, and suppliers, who may also go under.

And there is more to come. GM plans to close 1,100 dealers by next year.

Most analysts think the auto giants will survive, but in a story we've heard repeatedly this recession, for countless businesses which depended on the status quo, this truly is the end of the road.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Housing

Katie's on assignment today.

It's a dramatic example of a housing market that went from boom to bust - literally.

Bulldozers tore through a small housing development this week in San Bernardino County, Calif., demolishing 16 homes. These were not dilapidated houses that had become an eyesore. They were brand new. Four were ready for buyers , and had all the extras, like granite counter tops and a Jacuzzi. Others were in various stages of construction.

But home prices in the area have sunk 43 percent. The builder abandoned the project and the bank foreclosed, deciding it would be cheaper to tear them down than to complete and sell them.

This, ironically, comes as homelessness is on the rise - up 50 percent in many cities. A hundred miles away in Los Angeles, twice the number of families used winter shelters this year as last.

To the bank, this was about dollars, but some feel, it doesn't make much sense.

The Lasting Legacy Of Lincoln

(AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)
You'd be forgiven if you were Lincoln-ed out by now. Barack Obama's fascination with the 16th president of the United States has been well documented. More than 10,000 books have been written about Abraham Lincoln. And the information keeps coming. We've been working on a story for Thursday night's Evening News to mark the anniversary of Lincoln's 200th birthday.

It's fair to ask: Why? Hasn't enough been said? Aren't there other, more worthy subjects we could and should shift our attention to?

I've asked the same questions myself – more than once – but I keep going back. The mystique of the remaining Lincoln mysteries pulls me in. I'm no Lincoln scholar, to be sure, but I'm an avid admirer. His background. His successes and failures. His reformations. His internal turmoil. His otherwordly political acumen. His role as a husband and father. I've spent hours devouring Lincoln literature over the years, and I know I'm not alone. For some reason, Lincoln seems to communicate with so many of us. We still find endless ways to relate ...
