One Solution to Health Care – Healthy Food Where It's Needed

While the White House and Congress wring their hands over what to do next on the nation's health care front, there is a small pilot program in Detroit that directly attacks one of the problems that makes health insurance so expensive for all of us. That's because it addresses health itself, and the increasing cases of obesity, high blood pressure and heart attacks that are doing so much damage all around us.

To go back a few steps, Detroit – a city of some 830,000 people – has no major grocery store chain within its boundaries. No Jewels. No Safeways. No Kroegers. No nothing. Crime is one factor in the flight of food stores. Neglect is another. Whatever the cause, the consequences are devastating. So the economically hard-pressed state of Michigan is doing something about all of it, unveiling a $75,000 pilot program to bring food to the front door.

Called MI Neighborhood Food Movers, the plan is simplicity itself.

"There's no rocket science to this at all," said Lisa Johanan when we interviewed her last week. Lisa is executive director of the Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp., and founder of Peaches and Greens grocery. "I mean it's a very simple thing – put some produce on a truck and you drive through the neighborhood."

And that's exactly what Peaches and Greens and two other suppliers do – bringing fresh vegetables and fruit into inner city neighborhoods bristling with derelict buildings, vacant lots and tons of liquor stores.

"In Detroit, 92 percent of food stamp recipients purchase their grocers from a liquor store or a gas station or a pharmacy," Lisa told us. "What kind of food do you get at a liquor store," I asked Lisa.

"You don't get anything fresh. That's for sure," she said.

Jeff Glor: Staples Center Sneak Peek

CBS News National Correspondent Jeff Glor with a sneak peak at his piece tonight on the CBS Evening News.

Hi everybody on cbsnews.com. It’s Jeff Glor outside the Staples Center in LA, the morning before the Michael Jackson memorial service here. You can see this enormous white board, that’s been set up. Folks taking pictures out in front of it. And literally thousands of people have been coming by to sign this board all morning long. If we pivot across the street, you can see the Nokia Plaza, where there are layers and layers television cameras, and tv correspondents preparing for this service tomorrow. I’m told that to get into this area tomorrow, you need a blue wristband, like the one on my arm right there. That’s to just get into the area, not even to get into the service itself. Police are going to try to keep people back as best they can. Make sure this is a safe environment. A story we’re working on for the evening news tonight is on the cost associated with this service: both the money that’s going to be generated for the city of Los Angeles, but also the amount of money they’ll be spending. Hope to see you at 6:30 eastern time for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
See you then.

Children Of The Recession: Psychological Impact

(CBS)
This was one of those stories that evolved while we were shooting. Our assignment was to look at the psychological impact of the recession on young people for our network-wide series, "Children of the Recession.” As we conducted background research we chatted with psychologists who spoke to the idea that in the early stages of development any changes can be disruptive to young people. We decided to focus our piece on teenagers for whom "fitting in" is particularly important.

We set out to profile one teenage girl, Kristen Beltran, who lives in Montclair, Calif. When we visited her school, Montclair High School, we saw how schools are becoming the first line of defense for many students when their parents are no longer able to provide as much at home. Our story started to shifted focus a bit to reflect some of the stories we heard at Montclair High.

CBS Evening News Producer Karen Raffensperger had identified Kristen as a person to profile after she came across her blog entries. Kristen vented her frustrations about the impact of the recession on her own life. Her dad (a welder) is not working as much these days and that has strained the family's finances. At 15 years old, she'd love to get a job to help her parents pay some of their bills, but her parents will not let her because they want her to focus on schoolwork.

On the front stoop of their home, Kristen's dad admitted to me that tension is growing within the family. Kristen's mother Betty explained, as we sat around a table in the back yard, that it's "our job as parents to protect our children." For Betty and her husband "protecting the kids" means keeping some of the specifics about family finances between themselves. However, Kristen says that can be counter-productive as she's aware of what is going on and only feels more helpless.

The Job Search

(AP)
This post was written by CBS News producer Amy Birnbaum, to accompany a Kelly Wallace piece on Friday's Evening News with Katie Couric.

As college seniors get their diplomas this month, there’s the usual excitement and the obvious relief. But this year more than any, the seniors we spoke with are worried, because so many of them are leaving college without a job.

An Assignment That's Nothing To Sneeze At

(AP/CDC)
This story was nothing to sneeze at...

I'm happy to say that I’ve survived a few days in Mexico City and have none of the symptoms of swine flu. One thing however does feel different; how unconsciously alert I am to my own body and all sorts of warning signs/hazardous behaviors around me. Perhaps it is just a case of biological adaptation to increase your chances of survival in more dangerous environments (if anyone has research on that - please do send my way) or it is a layer of your subconscious that just heightens your peripheral awareness under changing circumstances, but it is oddly cool.

When our producer on the ground welcomed my outstretched hand at the airport with a warning that hand shakes should be avoided, that is when the story started to sink in. Saturday evening when I sneezed at a restaurant and people three tables over turned to look, it sunk in a little deeper.

By the time I woke up on Sunday, my body had gone into this state of being. I noticed a man coughing as he walked into the elevator and instinctively pressed the button with a knuckle instead of a fingertip. I didn’t touch the handrails on the way down to the lobby. I took notice of the doorman who sneezed and oddly I searched for him the next couple of days to make sure he still seemed healthy. I washed my hands far more often, became conscious of otherwise unconscious actions like how many times my fingers touched my eyes to relieve an itch(eight times since landing) or how many times I had coughed (three) or sneezed (seven) over the past few days.

Behind The Scenes: Letting The Shoe Puns Fly

Mark Knoller is a White House Correspondent for CBS News. He was one of the small pool of reporters to accompany President Bush on his trip to Iraq and Afghanistan.
( )
It was President Bush’s last trip to Iraq and Afghanistan – two places in which Americans were still engaged in wars begun on his watch – and a guy throwing his shoes was the big story.

The jokes on Air Force One about that incident Sunday in Baghdad were flying faster than those shoes.

Even the president couldn’t resist – beginning an interview by telling reporters on the flight out of Iraq that he didn’t know what the shoe-hurler was saying – “but I saw his sole.” (Get it? Shoe sole?)

“It was a bizarre moment,” said Mr. Bush, and with mock pride he trumpeted his reflexes in ducking out of the way of the airborne footwear. “So you weren’t a lame duck,” I kidded the president to the moans and groans of his aides and my colleagues.

Back in the press cabin: “I bet they’ll be serving us “shoe-fly pie,” said one reporter.

“We’ll probably have to go shoe-less to the next press conference,” said another.

We wondered if the shoes thrown at the president were “wing tips," and whether the Secret Service would issue agents a new manual on “the taming of the shoe.”

And though President Bush was unscathed from the incident, Press Secretary Dana Perino suffered an injury. She was hit in the face by a heavy metal microphone stand that was swung around at her as security personnel rushed the shoe-hurler. It left her with a dark bruise under her right eye.

“Guess you could call that a shoe shiner,” a reporter said later...

From Interviewer ... To Interviewee

(CBS)
From Sen. Joe Lieberman to Dave Letterman all in one day!

Right after taping my exclusive sit-down with Sen. Joe Lieberman, it was time to head back to New York for another interview. Only in this one, I was the interviewee.

I'm Dave Letterman's guest tonight on "The Late Show!"

Honestly, I wasn't nervous at all. Maybe just a little bit. It was so ...

Behind The Scenes: Biden On Debating Palin

Last week on the CBS Evening News (and right here on Couric & Co!), we showed a little preview of what Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden told Katie when they spent a day together in Ohio earlier in the week. In tonight's show, we'll air Katie's full story about going behind-the-scenes with Senator Biden, including his response to this question:

Katie Couric: How is it preparing for the debates?

Sen. Joe Biden: Well, it’s kind of hard to prepare because I don’t know what she thinks. There’s been no – I don’t know a lot about her, so I have to assume for purposes of the debate that she agrees with John on everything.
