Katie Couric's Notebook: Air Travel

Katie's off today. I'm Bianca Solorzano.

You know how it is: you buy an airline ticket, pay the checked baggage fee and the extra charge for an aisle seat, and maybe even the new surcharge for flying on the busiest days.

All you really want is to get there on time.

Well, a report out today from the Brookings Institute finds the average flight delay is nearly an hour - and ten percent of all planes arrive at least two hours behind schedule.

Only four percent were that late in 1990, and they say it will only get worse as the economy improves and more people fly again.

The researchers blame too many short flights and an outdated air traffic control system. They say the government could ease the situation by investing in high speed trains - and new technology that would allow planes to fly closer together.

These are not quick fixes.

So, for now, get used to waiting. And hope the airlines don't start charging you an on-time arrival fee.

I'm Bianca Solorzano, CBS News.

The Notebook: Celebrating Lincoln

Katie Couric is on assignment. February 12 is not a national holiday. It never was. But it is the birthday of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.

Remembrances of Lincoln tend to get lumped into the celebrations on Monday - George Washington's birthday, popularly known as Presidents Day. It's kind of like being that kid whose birthday falls a little too close to Christmas, cheated out of a chance for two great gifts.

But not this year. It's the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, and there are events happening all over the country.

Last night the Ford's Theater reopened in Washington after an 18-month, $25 million renovation, it shines like a brand new penny again.

The guest of honor was our 44th president, Barack Obama, seated beside First Lady Michelle Obama in the front row.

Perhaps Lincoln doesn't need a holiday. He has a living legacy, an embodiment of the ideal to which he gave his life: freedom.

The Notebook: VP Debate

All eyes tonight are on St. Louis, where the two vice presidential candidates will hold their one and only debate, at Washington University.

Whether it's curiosity about Governor Palin or Senator Biden, 65 percent of voters, in our latest poll, say they are very likely to watch tonight. The audience may be even bigger than for last week's presidential debate.

But before we all get carried away, one cautionary tale: 20 years ago, the vice presidential candidates Lloyd Bensten and Dan Quayle met for one debate. Bensten told Quayle he was no Jack Kennedy, and was widely considered the winner.

The underdog Dukakis campaign couldn't wait for their bump in the polls the next day. And when the results came in, they had gained one point. Their pollster said, people never vote for vice president. Over the next few weeks, we'll learn whether this year makes history, yet again.

The Notebook: Minimum Wage

Katie is off, I'm Bianca Solorzano. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the law that established the minimum wage.

In 1938, as America struggled to climb out of the Depression, that wage was 25 cents an hour. It didn't hit $1 until 18 years later.

And now, it reaches anotehr milestone. For more, just click the monitor.

The Notebook: Drunk Drivers

The next time you get behind the wheel, you might have a good reason to wonder who else is on the road.

A government report out today shows that 15 percent of adults say they drive after they've been drinking.

The Notebook: Alternative Cancer Care

With more people living with cancer, instead of dying from it, a growing percentage are seeking alternative treatments to help with their care.

And for some, that could be a mistake.
